Keeping pigeons through winter
Keeping pigeons through winter
I'm just about ready to add pigeons to the coop I'm building and was wonding how they would fair over the winter. Do they breed successfully all year long or just when it's warm out? If they're not going to breed successfully, I'll probably just keep a small quantity of wild birds off and on so I don't have to feed and clean up after so many birds and probably skip late December and January this year so I don't have to mess with them at all (when it's bitter-azzed cold outside) and then work on raising some homers early this Spring..
Thanks for the info....

Re: Keeping pigeons through winter
They will breed year round as long as you put a light in there. I leave mine on all year round. I cant remember but I think they need 18 hours of daylight to lay in the winter, wish I could remember. Mine lay all year and lay well. Give them shelter, feed and water. You shouldnt be able to keep up with them!

Re: Keeping pigeons through winter
Some don't need lights and will breed through the winter. They would have to be establish breeding pairs before winter comes. Like was said lights will keep them all breeding. Oh, and 16 hours of light would be good.

Thanks Ohio, couldnt remember. And really what would the light hurt? If we all had birds we could expand our carbon footprint one light at a time!

Re: Keeping pigeons through winter
Since we're pretty much neighbors I thought I'd add that ours breed all winter without added light.

Hey Nebraska, hows the coop going? Mine is going up for sale if you are interested in it.

It's going well - just slow. My wife said if I don't get it out of the garage ASAP, I'm going to be LIVING in it!! I'll give you a ring so we can hopefully hook up this weekend. If you have any more birds, I'll take take those too. BTW - how come you're getting rid of your coop??markj wrote:Hey Nebraska, hows the coop going? Re: Keeping pigeons through winter
I am training on live wild phesants now. This pup is ready to hunt so I dont need these birds now. 2 eggs in the coop too, should hatch any day. I think this will be my last pup I train for awhile, the wife is asking me to reduce my pack to 2 dogs. I may offer 2 for sale here after the pups are sold. So I am reducing my training items, coop and pigions, maybe some kennels too. Just going to hunt with my son and not do pups any more. Gotta keep her happy so we can be happy do you have my cell number? best to call that, I am working swing shift now so my hours are mixed up a bit. Are you working in the field yet? The company I work for is hiring now.... IT security positions.
