Using Liquid Bovine Ivermectin

Post by Sandy Meador » Thu Oct 09, 2008 5:29 am

I have searched and read all I can find on this topic, but I want to ask and make sure I understand it 100% before I do this. I sure don't want to mess up!

Am I correct in this?

"Use .1 cc per 10 pounds of body weight every 30 days for heartworm/worm treatment in adult dogs."
This can be ANY adult dog - Labs & GSP?
What about puppies - I have a GSP that is 12 weeks old on Sat.

Also, by using this ivermectin - I have been told by one individual - that I will not have to use Frontline if I inject the correct doseage under the skin. Everything I have read says put the doseage on the food, not injected.

A vet told me I could give it to my puppies at 8 weeks. When I asked him about flea control he said it would kill fleas but did not have a residual effect. I took this to mean that it would not kill fleas weeks after dosage. I have been using it for about 5 years and have had no flea problems. I give it once a month orally I have never injected it under the skin.

It can not be used for all breeds. Some Herding breeds have adverse reactions often resulting in death.

I have used ivomec plus for quite a few years on dogs as young as a year up to my ten yr old lab. Not one problem. Just my two cents.

Ivomec Plus?

Straight from the Merial Website:

"Precautions

Transitory discomfort has been observed in some cattle following subcutaneous administration. Soft-tissue swelling at the injection site has also been observed. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Divide doses greater than 10 mL between two injection sites to reduce occasional discomfort or site reaction. Different injection sites should be used for other parenteral products.

IVOMEC Plus Injection has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species as severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs, may result.

For subcutaneous injection in cattle only.

This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use.

Restricted Drug - use only as directed (California)."

Question about using the paste. What is the dosage you use?

The syringes are good for 1250 lbs. The syringes themselves are gauged in "clicks", each click is worth 50 lbs. I give each dog 1 click.

Most folks use the .1 cc per 10 lbs body weight for the liquid. That equates to 1 click per 50 lbs of the paste.

Based on Snips (Brenda) being successful with .1 per 20 lbs of the liquid, I went to that and, thus, started using 1/2 click per 50 lbs of the paste.

.1 per 10 or .1 per 20 is still many times what is necessary for heartworm prevention.

do not use ivermectin plus,i use a diabetic syringe and normally give anywhere from 2.5 tenths to 1 half cc.do not inject ,give orally. you can also use the babby pig wormer, its a lower concentration. i use 1.5 cc for a fifty pound dog. been using it for years.
