Lost English Setter - 10/13/08 WI
My brother-in-law lost a 7 year old English Setter who answers to Nutmeg in the Merrill/Tomahawk (New Wood) area this afternoon.
She ran off, even through the e-collar when we got into a mess of birds and didn't come back.
She is wearing a green tri-tronics e/beeper collar that is turned on and she has a collar with his information on it.
He is staying in the Merrill tonight and heading back out looking for her tomorrow.
I wish I could have stayed to help...send some mojo please, and if anyone know somebody in that area, please get the word out that there is a lost dog out there.
Thanks.

Good luck on finding the setter. That really is too bad, but I guess it's something that can always happen when running a dog afield. Makes one want to buy a tracker or Garmin Astro.... Let us know if she turns up.

Had a buddy lose his elderly golden up in that area a couple of years ago, overnight and into the following day. We feared the worst as well but did the rounds, knocked on doors and left descriptions and contact numbers with everybody in the area. He got home and not an hour later got a call from a farm we stopped at, their son ran across Indy huddled next to a wood pile, he called mom to find out if she knew who's dog it might be and wallah! Best of luck!

Good luck. It gives me a sick feeling for you. I know I read somewhere recently about a guy who lost his dog during hunting, and he laid down some of his clothing (either where he last saw her or where he parked--I can't remember)--and the dog was laying on it the next day when he went back to search. Lucky man. Denise

This is the common way to recover your coon hounds the morning after a hunt.wems2371 wrote:Good luck. It gives me a sick feeling for you. It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I lost my dog once, she actually figured her way back to the pasture where I normally park my truck to hunt ( i guess she recognized the area and some familiar smells) that pasture was 5 miles from where we lost her. I was amazed, and so happy when I saw her.

I would suggest you go to the local schools and explain the situation and get permission to post a flyer on their walls and doors with a reward. That way you will get to virtually all the people in the area

This info from a Lake-link member:
"Call the Lincoln County Human Society and ask WJJQ to mention it on the radio. LCHS: 715-536-3459 WJJQ: 715-453-4481"
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys.
He did the jacket for two days with no luck. He has spoken with the loggers, DNR, and other bird hunters that will be hunting their for the week.
We will get on the horn to the vets office and sheriff.
I don't want to give GPS over the web for fear of people's covers, etc...but if anyone knows the area, the dog was lost at the intersection of Newwood Road and a Fire Lane close to a private gate.
The private gate has a fire number of Harding N6504.
Thanks again for all your positive thoughts.

I really hate hearing about guys who lost dogs. I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. I found my dog 24 hours later. It's really a sick feeling. I bought a Astro before the next hunt. Man, I love that thing.

Don't give up. Several years ago, a kid who belonged to our club lost his setter in a large public forest. He did everything right: clothes, crates, flyers, etc. Club members took turns searching from horseback. More than two weeks passed when he was spotted by a local, and the kid and his father were able to go catch the dog. He was a little thin and worn out, but otherwise fine.
Also, a few years ago, an old beagle made his way to our farm. He appeared well cared for, so we held onto him and notified the local vets (I don't put up 'dog found' posters, lest I become the local dumping grounds). We had that dog a couple of months before his owner found us.
