GSP coat color
GSP coat color
I have a 6 month old GSP. Her coat color has changed since she was very young with additional liver tick marks. Will her coat change more before she is fully grown?

Re: GSP coat color
Most of the Ticked dogs I have seen do tend to have more ticking to show as they get older. Not just in GSP's. I had a nearly White Brit, (Dexter RIP) that was nearly white as a put, once a couple years old he was heavily ticked. Same on Buster my French Brit, Black and white ticked, Nearly all Black & white, Roan type.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

The roan and ticking doesn't show till the pups are at least 3 to 4 weeks old and will get heavier till the dog matures. Other than that there should not be any other color change.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: GSP coat color
I have had pups born white and liver, and by 8 weeks they are a very dark liver roan. THeir color changes up to a year old, normally they just get darker with a heavier tick.

Hey birddogsunlimited, what a great illustration of how that dog's coat changed, very interesting.

Re: GSP coat color
The coat can change considerably over time. Anywhere under the white hair that they have dark skin, they have the potential to eventually grow in dark hair.
I've had a number of dogs that had little to no ticking at a year old that by six or eight had significant ticking.
I've had pups that at 8 weeks old were white/ticked/patched that by six were liver/ticked/patched.
I have a seven year old here now, that had zero ticking as a yearling that is now white/liver/ticked/patched with a significant amount of ticking.
At one year old Bullett had zero ticking. By two though some was just beginning on his legs.
As he approached six he had considerable ticking on his front legs, some on his back legs and just a little working up from the bottom of his chest/belly moving up towards his back.
Now as he approaches 9yo you can see significantly more on this legs and more moving up from his chest/belly progressing up towards his spine.
I have several that have ticked up much darker, but these pictures are the handiest. CR

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people
Re: GSP coat color
I am 99.99% sure all gsp pups are born white. Besides there permanent liver spots. They might shift as the dog grows. Their ticking/roaning grows in in the first 5 weeks. Well most of it...
