Tri-Tronics G2 vs. G3

Tri-Tronics G2 vs. G3

Postby HotDoug » Wed Jan 07, 2009 10:46 pm

I am looking to buy a new Tri-tronics collar to replace my old “100 Lite” that has given up the ghost. I’m thinking that I want to go with either the Tri-tronics “Upland G3 EXP” or the “Upland G2 EXP”. From what I understand, the main difference is the range. Do I need the 1 mile range for the roughly $170 upcharge?
I have a young GSP and don’t yet know how far he will range but I can’t imagine that he will range anywhere near ½ mile (I hunt MN, ND, SD and MT and don’t want/need a huge running dog). Am I selling myself short if I go with the shorter range of the G3 model?
I would love to hear your experiences and opinions.
Thanks

range truely varies with terrain and cover
the stronger the signal the better

They are both good collars and work well the g2 will reach out a bit more should you need it

I have the Upland G3 EXP. I bought it because it expands to 3 dogs which is perfect for my 3 GSP's. I have to say when it is functioning properly I am very satisfied, however, I purchased this set-up about 2 yrs ago and not all 3 have worked at the same time since I got them. I have had to send a reciever back to TT now for the 3rd time. The issue is that the reciever of the orange collar will not set to the orange transmitter button. This one happened 2x and the yellow reciever did it once. Never have had a problem with the green one yet. (Iam not sure if it's the moisture or what is causing the problem, and niether does TT). Just quite a bit of money to be having so many issues. But I will say this...TT has sent me a new one every time one goes down even after 2 yrs of problems.

I've got the Tri-Tronics Classic 70 G2 EXP.
I'm hunting wild quail in West Texas with 2 BIG running ES's.

Couldnt be happier with the unit. Everything works perfectly with plenty of range.

Best of luck.

HotDoug,

This is my second season using the G3 and it has worked fine so far. I did have 1 of the
beeper go bad, but TT replaced it. Exc. service.
I added the 3rd collar this season and no issues with it either.
I mostly hunt hill country so I suppose range could be an issue, but I haven't had any problem with range yet.
I have a gsp pup that is starting to reach out a little farther than my other 2 dogs, but so
far I like the G3 very well.

I can't tell you about the G3 but I own the G2 and love it, just make sure you buy the carry case for the large remote if you get it.. excellent collar system
