Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
I have both, four setters and four pointers. Three setters out of Long Gone George and one Calico Future Force. Pointers out of Jeb's VD, Crazy Horse, Beaver Meadow Benjaman and Thunderhills Zeus. I would post pictures but with a darn dial up it takes a week. I run them in cover trials and hunt grouse.
Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
Mutty Pointer (don't ask)
she's no trialer, and I just don't think its for me anyhow. I like being in the woods and in the rimrock mostly with just my hunt'n partner.

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
I have a pointer. But, if I didn't need a duck retriever I would have a setter.
Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
Was referring to English Pointers.Though I know there's plenty of good German Shorthairs out there.I've seen some good ones. Most are bird finding machines. And I know you have some Top ones Brenda.I heard about you from a friend Bruce Shaffer.

I guess that is my bias showing through. I never even thought of english, thats funny.
Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
English Pointer? Now who'd wanna go and do that. After all, Germany makes the best beer, the best dogs, the best cars...England??? oh yeah those muffins...mmmmmm
Just kidding. Gorgeous dog's, might be consideration for our next.

Grouse Dog,
Sounds like you're Loaded with good dogs and bloodlines.I'd like to get a George pup sometime in the future.I have a Penn Star female. And a 3 month old male Elhew bred pup.I'm just a gun dogger but may try dabbling in grouse trials in the future. Those Pointer lines are top grouse lines also.

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
A good one doesn't cost anymore than a German I tried a bunch of those German dogs and ended up back with the English Setters and Pointers they do a better job at what I hunt and where I trial. I've only been trialing about twenty years, before that just hunted but I always tried to breed to the best in the grouse woods. Had dogs out of Sam L's Rebel, Meteor, Turnto, Glencrest Doctor, Grouse Ridge Will, Leroy, Reroy, Storm, Hank, J, Been, John and Wrongway, Teaberry and a bunch I can't remember.BoJack wrote:Grouse Dog,

Had a friend in the 70's George Dom,Clearspring,Md.Who bred Sam L's Rebel and Hickory Pride Setters. Also had dogs heavy in Sam L's Skyhigh and Retinascope blood.I had a Grouse Ridge Will son out of a Flaming Star female in the mid 70's.Easiest breaking Satter I ever owned.Hunted him alot and won some walking gun dog stakes with him also.

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
I had an ES once a few years back, bred in N.D. She was a terrific natural retriever on waterfowl as long as see could see where they landed. Beautiful pointing dog, I also used her on grouse because I wasn't hunting other upland birds at the time.
Very biddable dog. Such a natural she required almost no formal training at all.

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
My setter puppy, Tico.
She is out of TerHaar Rocko and TerHaar Grace. Dogs on her sires side include 5XCH Grouse Ridge Reroy (Grand Sire), 3XCH Grouse Ridge Hank, R-U CH Long Gone Sam, and CH Pinnacle among others. Dogs on her dam's side include 2XCH/3XR-U CH Long George George (Grand Sire), 8XCH/4XR-U CH Long Gone Agnes (Grand Dam), 5XCH/3XR-U CH First Rate, and CH Long Gone Stokely among others.
Can someone help with out with information on Grouse Ridge Sandy and Grouse Ridge Chris? I can't find much for pedigree info on these two. Both are females on the Sire's side. Grouse Ridge Sandy is the Grand Dam and is out of Grouse Ridge Hank and Grouse Ridge Chris, but that is as far back as I can find.
I have never trialed with the pointing dogs, but I do plan on entering Tico into some puppy trials this fall. I'm hoping there will be a coverdog trial with puppy stake in WI otherwise she will just be in a AF pointing dog club trial puppy stake.

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
I've got a couple of Setters, and my hunting buddy has a Pointer. We hunt them from Montana to Arizona and everywhere in between as often as possible.
We like the big running renegade type.
I have dabbled in AF walking trials a tiny bit in the past and we just ran my one young Setter and my buddie's Pointer in our first horseback handled stake last weekend. They must have had some pity for us rookies given that our horses, and our dogs, and most importantly us humans didn't have much of a clue. In sympathy they gave my setter second place in the open derby, my first and likely last field trial accomplishment.
Oh and for you confused folks, there is only one "Pointer". I know there are a few other types of dogs out there that point (mainly rabbits and rodents I think) but these other ones need adjectives in their names to differentate them from the orginal and real mycoy In the words of the Highlander: There can be only one!
...... Pointer (not English, just Pointer)

Re: How About Them Pointer And Setter People?
Bojack - Pointers are my choice. Sory, no Pics. I'm technologically challenged.
Don't hunt much anymore...no birds and the seasons are all cut up with this or that specil deer season.
My dogs are heavy with Evolution /Endurance through Redemption's Reward, Arrival and Gunsmoke's Fat Boy with a good bit of Hook's and Guard Rail in there also.
I mostly do local trials these day, both AF and AKC. It's fun and I can ride to watch the dogs.
My season is almost done. One more trial here in DE, next weekend and that's it 'till the fall.
Next fall the AKC Pointer National Championships will again rotate to the East ans will be held on the Wye Is. WMA on the Eastern shore of MD. I am looking forward to that. I had fun the last time that Ch. was out this way.

Ray,
Not much Gunsmoke blood left is there?
What differences do you see between AF trials and AKC trials?
I live in Western Md.and may just travel down to spectate that AKC Championship this fall.

We don't live very far apart, I am in southwest Pa. Your right about the gunsmoke it's getting all, had a litter of pointer pups in Jan that goes back to Van Mac, top and bottom but theres so much other stuff in there that it's pretty much washed out. I was lucky enough to hunt over Van, he was something.BoJack wrote:Ray,

Bojack -
In my area the biggest difference I see between AF and AKC trial dogs is in the running style that is expected.
If your dog does not run with a merry tail, you are not going to place much, even in weekend AF trials. You can pretty much forget about doing anything in any hour AF shooting dog stakes if the dog does not run with a merry tail.
In the AKC stakes I have attended, a dog that runs with a floating tail or even a flat tail, will have a good chance of placing if it hunts, handles and points birds with style and manners.
As far as how the trials themselves are conducted, there are some minor things, rules and such, but I have seen nothing of any real consequence in terms of differences. I would say the AKC all age stakes I have seen were roughly equivalent to what you would see in an AF shooting dog stake.
Some of the AKC Gun Dog stakes, by way of contrast, seemed to have dogs that worked much closer and were more responsive to the handler's cues, with much less vocalization on the part of the handlers. Reading the AKC rules, the kinder handling, mofre visible dog would be consistent with what the AKC considers a "Gun Dog".
Like any trial, much depends on the limitations of the venue and the preferences of the judges. Most of the venues in my area are on the small side, with significant areas of cover, which tends to favor dogs that run and hunt in a more controlled fashion.
