GSP folks
Re: GSP folks
Setter, English Pointer, Britt, Springer, Lab, Retriever, and German Shorthair owners/trainers all have such great advice, though. That would segregate the knowledge. Just my $0.02

Re: GSP folks
I agree.....keep letting the GSP owners and the dog owners play together! We occassionally learn something from them!!!

Sporting dogs are gun dogs and we are a gun dog forum. We are not breed specific but welcome everyone to join, take part, learn, and enjoy without having to find a thread that only includes just one breed. We are topic oriented and not breed.

No offense but there's a whole 14+ page thread on one breed! I've see threads on setters and all other breeds. Heck Ezzy, I don't mind if you make a Britt thread. Less stuff I have to weed through.

Re: GSP folks
When you come to GSPs it's a huge world, different from most of the other pointing breeds. The thread on the breed standard should give you some inclination as to the diversity of the breed. These dogs were originally breed with specific game and purpose in mind. Here in the states we have chosen(some of us) to mold a great breed into a working dog for our situation. The GSP is one of the best breeds to do this with because of the original standards set forth. See, where many are missing the point on the other thread is in this. All dogs serve a purpose. What we as owners and breeders need to determine is whether to develop the breed to suit us or find another. With the GSP it was an easy way to mold a dog into the one we needed. All of the venues out there have different dogs competing, the GSP is doing them all! As far as breed standard, it's just that, a standard! Something to fall back to or build on. Any good breed can use improvement but why is diversity frowned on? One mans game is his and not everyone's. This breed is to great to be confined to one belief. Accept all of them as they are and know it's in the betterment of the breed in general.
Re: GSP folks
The problem is that once everyone breeds to their own wants and desires you no longer have a breed but a whole lot of dogs that were bred from GSp's but no longer are. Some are big, some are little, some are white, some are black, some run real big, some are very slow and close, some don't hunt at all, and some want to chase rabbits , and some want to point birds, some have long hair, some have short hair, and some have a wire coat. All are good dogs and very diversified but have little resemblene to a German Shorthaired Pointer.aylaschamp wrote:When you come to GSPs it's a huge world, different from most of the other pointing breeds. ok, take exactly what you said and leave out the color and apply it to the Britts! Same goes! You'd have to take a few of your statements off for the GSPs though. Re: GSP folks
Take exactly what I said and you do not have to leave out the color and it is true of Brits and every other breed. With out a standard you do not have a breed. And in dogs diversity is good, thats why we have over a 100 recognized breeds and 20 or 25 of those are sporting dogs. I found one I really liked and have bred them for almost fifty years now. But there are a lot of great breeds with a lot of great dogs in each. Let hope and pray we can keep all of them since they should fill the wants of anyone wanting a sporting dog in their life.ok, take exactly what you said and leave out the color and apply it to the Britts! I can just picture some brittany lover, a long time ago, wondering what in the world those crazy Germans were doing mixing all those breeds together trying to get an all around hunting dog that could suit the needs of just about any hunter. "We have specialist for any kind of hunting you want. Why would you want some mongrel to do them all" LOL
I think diversity within the breed is ok. I also see no fault in the open registration practices of the AKC. If you don't like it don't buy it. It's a consumer driven market. AKC registration provides proof that the parents are who they say they are and combats fraud. Breeders have the FREEDOM to breed what they think is the best GSP, and the buyer has the FREEDOM to choose rather or not they agree. And furthermore if you happen to want a GSP from a controlled and closed registraion you can still get one in this great country of ours. Its called a DK
Breed standards seem somewhat of an afterthought and are subject to change according to consumer demand.

I gave one of those to my older dog when she was a pup. She carried it around for along time. Then one day she shook it untill the head popped off then quickly dug all the stuffing out of it. I remember thinking , I hope she doesn't do that to the real pheasants. It hasn't been a problem

Man! Rookie is one well built dog as well! Question for all you GSP people, I know what I like as far as heads on my dogs but the "breed standard" and what I'm seeing in dogs now are a bit troubling. It might be my preferences overshadowing "breed standard" I'm not sure. It seems a bunch of dogs heads don't fit there body? Anyone else see what I'm seeing? Without talking trash about any ones dog, especially mine!

Re: GSP folks
I understand where you are coming from. I actually did not look back through this thread, but since I switched to the "dark side" (a shag) I actually notice the different head structures more in the setters than I did with the GSPs. There are know setter studs (VERY well known) that seem to throw certain heads. Some good, some, not to my liking, but when you see one, you have a pretty good idea where they come from.aylaschamp wrote:It seems a bunch of dogs heads don't fit there body? That was not my intention, he's an awesome looking dog. I have seen others GSPs that have a smaller and what I call a "pencil" head. My dog, Sandy, has one but she is also a very small in frame dog so it doesn't look that off to me.PntrRookie wrote: Now aylaschamp, if you are referring to the top picture of Rookie...where he is stacked...I am CRANKING on his collar - almost flattening his head.

I'm with you!
Not many have. I've tried to explain the color many times and a picture just doesn't do it. A few members on this board have seen her in person and she looks way different in reality than in a pic. Here are a few more like her.markj wrote:Very interesting I must say. Never saw that color in a shorthair.
I have more pics of other dogs but in fear of ramifications would rather not post them. I know of several litters across the country with similar outcomes and no similar breeding. All of the dogs are marked the same!
You can see the roaning better in this pic
I usually don't post much on her because it stirs a can of worms but here she is in her first open NSTRA trial a few months back. She had a 4-4 and a back and took a 3rd. I only ran her that one brace the whole weekend. These are pics from that trial.
I was so proud of my pup here, she did better than I would have ever expected.
And even got to ride in the front seat on the way home (for a little while, then I threw her back in the trailer)
