Grovespring, MO—Chantilly has captured the title of 2005 National Red Setter Open Shooting Dog Champion. Piccadilly was named runner-up. Both of these Irish setter females were handled by their owner, Dr. Roger Boser of Seven Valleys, PA. Twelve dogs competed for the title on the grounds of the Sportsmen’s Association at Grovespring, MO. The trial was held November 3-5. Conditions were less than ideal with high temperatures and high winds factoring into the performances in all stakes.

The new National Red Setter Amateur Shooting Dog Champion is Chaparral, owned and handled by Don Beauchamp of Cheney, KS. Chantilly won runner-up for Dr. Roger Boser. There were 12 fine entries in this stake.

Three supporting stakes were also held. The Open Derby winner was Sandstone, female owned and handled by Dr. Boser. Second went to Rocky’s Straight Arrow, male owned and handled by Brian Gelinas of Indiana.

The Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Classic drew seven entries. King Cormac, owned by Allen and Deb Fazenbaker of Ohio and handled by Allen, was first. Moonshine Runner placed second for owner-handler Jim Ashby of Kentucky. Highmeadow Tribal Rose was third for owner Mike Sullivan of Oklahoma.

ONE-HUNDRED-AND-FIRST QUAIL FUTURITY
Inola, OK—A competitive starting field of 33 was received for the 101st running of the American Field Quail Futurity at the McFarlin-Ingersoll Ranch near Inola, OK. Rock Acre Windstorm, pretty pointer female carrying the colors of Cecil Cole of Brownwood, TX, won this 2005 breeders’ classic with two commendable efforts in which she tallied a pair of exceptional finds. Cecil Cole bred, owns and handled Windstorm.

Allen Vincent claimed second and third with Suka’s Haystack and Thunder Boomer, respectively, the former owned and bred by Karl Nyquist of Palmer, CO, and the latter owned by Larry Alexander, Nicky and Wade Harris and Eugene “Pappy” Key. Dr. Jim Davis of Greenville, TX, bred the litter. Haystack had three finds in his bids, while Boomer was placed on race.

Fourth was Broadway Drifter, pointer male owned by Jim Stiles of Helena, OK, and handled by C. W. “Chuck” Taylor, who bred the litter. Drifter was credited with one find.

Judges for this renewal, which features 30-minute qualifying heats and one-hour finals, were Lynn Oxendine of Joplin, MO, and Garland Priddy of Terry, MS, who acquitted themselves with distinction given the record heat and high winds that challenged the young contenders.

REGION 17 WALKING SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP
Piedmont, KS—Honky Tonk Outlaw, stylish pointer male handled by his proud owner Maury Sword of Kearney, MO, annexed the Region 17 Championship for the second year in a row with a one find performance over the spectacular hills of the Knox Ranch above the southeast Kansas community of Piedmont. Missouri judges Bob Reynolds and Tony King named Smokin Stan, lively setter male, runner-up. Stan traveled up from North Texas with owner E. J. Hall to claim this win in a field of 24 starters after his one find effort. There were several impressive performances and others were getting it done only to have one too many finds during their hour. Prairie chickens took out more than one contender and quite a few wild coveys were moved during the two days of running in mild fall weather.

The Wichita Bird Dog Club and Chairman Greg Gibson did an outstanding job of hosting this championship for Region 17.
