NGSPA Region 8 (Now w/ pictures)

Post by The Zephyr » Tue Sep 22, 2009 7:57 am

The region 8 in Cheyenne WY begins this week. I'll be traveling north from Denver to see Natasha run in the Open Shooting Dog and I hope to run her myself in the Amateur.

I look forward to seeing some old friends and meeting some new people.

As a sidebar I'm staying with friends in Golden, CO at an elevation of 7800'. When I arrived at their house yesterday afternoon I was greeted by the bugling of bull elk from the side hills around the house!!!!

The next morning, after my friend dropped his daughter off at the bus stop. He came in and told me the elk were sparring in the driveway.

Wow, that is going to be some tough competition. Lets see, there is the current NGPDA Champion, there is a previous year's NGSPA AA of the Year, and there is Abby, who has won the AA Hun there twice, not to mention one or two others who can absolutely stroke it. I hope they have plenty of extra horses.

Right on! Nice updates! Smaller entries than years past? Been some big entries at trials this summer so thought this one would have a ton of dogs. Wish this trial didn't always conflict with trials here at home, maybe others having the same dilemma. ?

Still pickin' the cactus needles out of my fingers from de-booting the dogs.

Bill,

Bandit was in the first brace this morning. Unfortunately I was on the road to Fort Collins at 8:30. It is warmer today then yesterday, but the heat wasn't apparent when I left.

Natasha had two nice finds in the first fifteen minutes. She was picked up for taking steps to Dennis after the shot.

Her first find in OSD:

Image

She's just looking for a belly rub, some praise and to move on to the next find. That just won't do in this game.

Bill,

I would like to have stayed longer but I had a business meeting in Fort Collins this morning.
I saw some really nice performances laid down. I'm sure the judges had four or five good dogs to work with yesterday alone.
Horsepower is definitely an issue. The terrain is very unforgiving.
We did have a freeze the other night turning the mountain mahogony to a spectacular russet/scarlet.
Pictures will be forthcoming. I just don't have the interface for my camera nor a workstation to upload them.

When did Brath become such a big time trial handler, I thought Eldon Hongo ran Richardsons string, just wondering. Bill

Eldon moved this year and no longer handles for Richardson. I think he's with Killams now.

I may have misunderstood what I heard a while ago. You'd have to get the straight scoop from Eldon or someone else who has first hand knowledge.

Eldon is with the Killams and so is John. Eldon's wife Terry is scouting for Eldon. She is a heck of a rider. Spot is with Eldon. Dennis Brath is running the Richardson's dogs.

I saw your other post. Looks like Im going to miss you. I was hoping to get to visit with you. I always enjoy reading you post. I am becoming a gdf junky. I guess there could be worse vices ;) I got to see spot run (that sounds funny) in the AA last year at Eureka. A beatiful and accomplished dog. I know your proud. Maybe Ill be fortunate enough someday to run again in the nationals. Im in the process of breaking Duke now and he is looking pretty good on birds. His race needs to be developed. Anyway take care.

Doug,

This is the first time I've gone to this event and I believe the Great Lakes Championship is the same time. It seems the pros leave the dakotas and disperse in different directions all with seperate goals. Some are looking to stretch the dogs out in hour stakes in preparation for Eureka, others are still trying to qualify dogs for the event at weekend trials. September and October are probably the peak of the Fall trial season. This weekend in New England - Middle Atlantic, there are three AKC trials within driving distance.

It looks really open and easy. Its not. Its tough. There is a big "break" that runs the length of the course. The course first goes through the flat lowland, then up through the break and along the top. The break is where the birds are, the dogs get up in there and have a find, and it can be very difficult to dig them up or get to them. The Hun course goes through willow bottoms, and the birds have lots of places to run where you can't get to them, so there are unproductives. Great trials, both of them, and not without challenges for the dogs or the handlers.
