AKC Field Trial in Southern Indiana

Post by Hotpepper » Thu Oct 29, 2009 8:12 pm

There will be 2 new field trials to be held at the Pike County Birdhunters Grounds near Petersburg Indiana. If you live in the mid west this will end up being a good deal for you. I found the 2 seperate clubs holding them today on the AKC website for trials.

This is a very nice area and AKC trials in Indiana have been non existent for about 10+ years, take a look and enter and go and have some fun.

These two clubs (Kentuckiana Pointing Breeds Assoc. and Weim of Louisville) put on their first combined set of walking trials back in February, actually, and I attended. Nice bunch of people (not only from the clubs putting on the trials, but also the guys associated with Pike County Club), good amenities and it went pretty smooth for their first trials. The grounds are a little small, but its a good place for a walking trial. Birdwork was abundant because there's really just one treeline around the outer edge of the course, so your gun dog better be broke (and honor)...but no one complained about going birdless.

Jerry,

Are these both walking trials or horseback? The one says walking and the other is not listed as walking.
We would like to go over if they are horseback but not sure I can get our derby dog around in walking stakes.
We may run a broke dog that has his FC and only needs a couple points for his AFC.

I was hoping when I looked it up one of them would be the weekend before Thanksgiving so I could run while Im back home. Oh well at least I will get to chase some birds while we are there.

My understanding is that these are walking trials, they held them this spring and it is a very nice group of folks and a very well run trial. As JP said, the grounds are a little on the small side if you have a big going dog, and other than the treeline it is pretty wide open so you can watch the dogs work. Brenda, Looks like we'll get to catch up this fall after all! Look forward to seeing ya'll there!

Here is the link: http://www.akc.org/events/search/index. ... on=results

The second is all walking but a walking derby is listed and without a premium I cannot tell. I will send a PM to them.

I have both premiums... the verbage in both premiums is as follows: "All stakes will be walking handler stakes. No horseback handling will be allowed in any stake. Horseback scouting is allowed but no horses will be provided."

Hope this helps, I would highly recommend this event, should be a good one!

Are those dates right.......one starts on the 12th, the other on the 14th? That's a bummer, I wanted to go to those, but I will be in Kansas wild bird hunting for the opener there.....good luck to all.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention Jerry.

Those are the correct dates... Missouri has its opening weekend of firearms deer season that weekend, so I figured it wouldn't be a terrible weekend for me and the dogs to take a break, since the blaze orange brigade will be out with high-powered rifles.

I am very glad to see the trials come about, I knew they were going to do that at Pike County and it is now official.

I live very close and hope to get up there and see some folks. EWvansville is very close, about 35 miles from me.

I live a few hours away, and plan to quail hunt at nearby Glendale FWA this weekend. I was wondering when would be the best time to try to catch the walking gun dog and ameature walking gun dog runs. I assume the morning of the second day of each trial, but I've never attended one before. Any thoughts?

There are only about 3-4 braces of Puppy and Derby in the Thursday & Friday Trial, so it might be similar or a bit more for the Sat/Sun trial. With that said, those stakes are shorter and the bulk of the time will be spent running the gundog stakes since it looks like there are several dogs to sort.

If it were me, I'd try to make it around a mealtime as the Pike County Birdhunters do a great job of feeding us while we're there

I had trouble in the spring also... the directions were on the premium but if you're not familiar with the area it can be tough. The grounds are between Evansville and Petersburg and there is a sign that says Pike County Birdhunters on the West side of the road.

It was a fun event. Real good people. The folks at the Pike County Bird Club fed us very well. The club house is great. It even has a second story deck looking over the field for those who want to watch dogs without having to ride. Field was a bit small but was ok for a walking event.

Guess it might adjust my opionion that Nike won the 20 dog ALGD on Sunday - so I may not be an unbiased reporter! She had a real good race, 3 finds (one a large covey), and perfect birdwork. All this during the hottest part of the day. Not bad for a girl 13wks out of whelp! I can never underestimate that girl's drive and determination. Wasn't quite sure if the judges were thinking she was running too big or not as it was a walking event (we had to do some "creative" coursing at the end to get 30 min out of the field)- guess they thought it was just right though! I was real proud of my girl wether they would have used her or not! :D

Congrats, Art!

I wasn't there, but I suppose I can brag on one of Shooter's kids. His girl Potter took 2nd in Open Gun Dog at that trial. Behind one of Brenda's dogs, I believe - if that's right, congrats Brenda!

Congrats to Art and Brenda.

Years ago, when they held AF walking stakes there, they started across from the trap field and and went toward the woods, circled back to the cemetary and back around. They would still work with a little mowing. I will have to go up next time.

Art, you should have come down and stayed me, not far at all.

I'm probably equally unbiased as Art, since my young male was able to take 2nd place in the AGD and ALGD on Thurs/Fri for 1 pt each and finish his AFC; but I thought it was a great weekend trial as well. Tough callback got the better of us in the AGD on Saturday, but I was really pleased to take 3rd in a VERY nice ALGD on Sunday. It's nice when you can run with high caliber dogs, 1st place dog was FC/AFC, 2nd place dog nearly finished, 3rd place dog DC/AFC, and the 4th place dog is a Nat'l Am. SD Ch./FC. (Art, I thought Miss Vegas was going to take a second trip around the course... What a nice dog!)

Really fun weekend trial. Congrats to all who won and placed.

I was starting to worry about that same thing. And when you guys said she was going up the edge of cut bean field off course I really started worring. Good thing I was able to get her back.

We really had to do some creative coursing for her at the end even with 3 finds. More so than Nike. I was suprised with the 4th for her. Gone too long (although found standing) and figured she was just too much dog for most folks in a walking stake. I would have understood if they didn't use her as I probablly shouldn't be putting her in walking stakes anyways (although she adjusted to me on foot from what she does on horseback realativly well). I was liking what I was seeing though

Congrats Potter and Holly; Archie, Dolly and Brenda; Wendell and Caleb; and everyone else who placed!

Jerry - really missed seeing you there.
