Barking???

Post by wildman » Sat Dec 24, 2005 12:12 pm

I have a 6 month old pointer pup that barks while hunting with other dogs. She only does it about the first thirty minutes she is out. She doesnt do it at all by herself. Is there anything that can be done to correct this, or is it something she will grow out of? I would appreciate any input. thanks

What I have personally experienced with this is, it is just excitement, usually grows out of, I have put a bird out for a quickie, and it seems to change the train of thought, I do not do it all the time, but some of the times. Even with nothing done, it will usually grow out, will not swear to but 9 outa 10 times, as dog grows and matures, it disappears. Thanks Jonesy Jonesy's Gun Dogs Berea, Kentucky

Is this pup tagging? A lot of young pups will bark while tagging it's bracemate.

Following, running together, act like they are playing tag, and just farting around. If done correctly, it can 90% of the time be broke. Common with alot of young dogs, or younger dogs. Thanks Jonesy

There is also "head tagging" . The front running dog will seek out the back dog and run in front of it to get them to take chase. The front pup will learn be slick at it. It can be a major problem in an adult dog.

Doesn't sound like anything but normal exhuberant puppy tricks. It will quit after a few trips to the field and it starts hunting it's qwn birds. As of now it is playing and not hunting. Happens a lot with a puppy raised by itself.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I think that it could be "tagging" because she only does it with my older dogs. When she is just with the other pups she doesnt do it, and she doesnt do it at home in the yard. It is only after a good drive when we are hunting. I guess it is just excitement.

My opinion is that the dog is very competitive! I have one that is 4 years old and does the same thing if another dog gets to the front faster or has the jump on him. He also will do it off of horse or 4 wheeler if you change a direction and he has to catch up!.
I don't see a problem in it, I like it infact! Shows me a lot of heart!
