Burning issues
Okay everyone, I'm opening up the phone lines on my radio show to let callers vent on the hot issues among outdoorsmen. So, what are they? Thanks.

Gun dog breeds bred for the show ring.

The very concept that a gun dog breed can be declared a "Champion" without ever practically demonstrating the qualities of a gun dog. Trotting around a show ring does not a gun dog make.FLocker wrote:Gun dog breeds bred for the show ring.

In Ohio, they are bagged in the first day when the vast mob cleans them up.mcbosco wrote:Ok, where do the 55,000 pheasant released each year on NJ State Land go? LOL

I stumbed into this one time. I was with my son deer hunting. The mob started lining up when it was still pitch dark. We fled. Drove by where most were parked. It looked like the parking lot at a Cincinnati Bengals home game. Campers, grills, people "tail gating", etc.
To me, it's not much like hunting,

Loss of access to properties due to the leasing of grounds to those with money to spare... To me, this has led to the ruination of hunting as a the sport.

We are showing our shortcomings when we forget to look and test the complete package, without any one quality outweighing the others.

I detest the guy who gets his first bird dog, doesnt know how to train it but the dog still turns out decent. Then the guy starts thinking he needs to get a female to breed that dog to cause he know's what he is doing as a breeder! Boy that chaps my hide!

They are declared Conformation Champions only. I don't have a problem with it.FLocker wrote:Gun dog breeds bred for the show ring.

The effect that PETA, HSUS and local dog breeding legislation will have going forward on our gun dog breeds...and the sport of pure bred dogs.

I have three problems:Sharon wrote:They are declared Conformation Champions only. I don't have a problem with it.FLocker wrote:Gun dog breeds bred for the show ring.
1. Every other championship is "<qualifier> Champion". Only the conformation champion is "Champion" unqualified.
2. Qualify on the Line. Some of the breed clubs, at some trials, usually the bigger ones, require the dogs to be judged as within the breed standard before being allowed to run in the trial. There is no reciprocal arrangement for the conformation shows.
3. The "trends" that occur within the conformation community that are antithetical to the function of the dogs. Where form departs from function. Like the *monstrous* size of the show labs and the like.

I go to Westminster every year and its amazing what a bench Lab looks like now!!!! They are hardly taller than a Basset Hound, this big hulk of a body, no neck and no legs. While I cant opine on the hunting talents of the sporting breeds at that show, I didn't see anything to complain about other than the Labs.
Re: Burning issues
Did you take in the Dog classes for Gordon Setters? They look a new breed of Longhaired Black Angus calves. The could have called them Scottish Highlanders, but that name was already taken.mcbosco wrote:

I'm quite sure 4H will have a class for them in the not so distant future.

Re: Burning issues
Definately need to expose the wakos that are trying to stop hunting, pet ownership, meat eating, via legsilsation. Dogs, land, guns. ETC. Tort reform to make them pay for loosing their battles they are trying to bankrupt our organizations.
PETA, HUSU, Wild life federation, green peace etc.
Exposing more children to hunting, fishing, photography, dogs, hiking, helping others. Good sportsmanship, good ethics, respect for the land owners and other hunters regardless of the dogs they have, the games they play, the quarry they have opportunity to hunt.

You know when I wrote that I remembered the Setters were a bit overdone on the coat-side, LOL, but I was getting ready for the after party at that point
Re: Burning issues
Interesting thoughts on the subject.
I go to one "famous' conformation show a year. I do feel badly for the German Shepherd who is now walking on his hocks. I think the GSPs , Brittanys , hounds and terriers look magnificent.

Redtail Hawks. Had two of them on seperate occasions dive bomb my downed bird last year. Seems as though every other telephone pole in Iowa has one perched on it. If it was only legal.

Re: Burning issues
Pepper, reminds me of another one.
Not much we can do about it but. They have the right to do as they want.
Folks buying land and posting it. Meaning they don't live here, they have no camp here. They post it just so folks can't hunt. VIA Roxanne Quimby, Chellie Pingree etc. They are buying up tracts all around the state from hurting paper companies, farmers and from old family tracts.
The others are the ones that post their land with hunting by permission only and never ever give permission to anyone.
I always ask for permission posted or not but on these larger tracts that the paper companies owned you never ever had to ask except if you were doing a bear baiting station, then permits and permission was needed.
I like the way the paper companies work.

I had a peregrine falcon take my planted bird before the dog could work it. :roll:twofeathers wrote:Redtail Hawks. Had two of them on seperate occasions dive bomb my downed bird last year. Seems as though every other telephone pole in Iowa has one perched on it. If it was only legal.
