Chip,
I didn't think they would run them this a.m. frozen snow/ice and ground has to be hard on an animal for that long a period.
Did you see the picture of South's Late Night after pick up yesterday? His tail was basically a big icicle. Poor fellow.

Yes I saw that pic as well, tough going on dogs, horses, and handlers from what I am hearing. I have a good buddy down there this week he sends me the latest news...From what he tells me Late Night had one helluva display in some very tough conditions.BrettBryan wrote:Chip,

Chip,
I'm going up to the bird dog museum tomorrow night for a fish fry. I hope to meet some folks up there. I think Purina is sponsering it.
I am going to try to go ride this coming Monday and Tuesday if i can swing it.
Doug,
Ha! I hear ya! That would definitely solve the problem

Cross post...Both dogs finished the three hours. Sean's young dog had, I believe, 3 or 4 finds. White Powder Pete had 7 dug up finds. The ground is still solid ice and the dog's feet were cut up and bleeding but he never quit and finished far to the front on a find. He's a heck of a great all-age bird dog.

SCKWEST,
I could be wrong about this, but i dont' think he's a Joe Shadow bred dog. I think i remember someone telling me they don't know why they named the dog In the Shadow, because he wasn't a Joe Shadow bred dog.
Jeff,
I was up at the fish fry last night at the Bird dog museum. I got there about 6:30 and by 8:00pm, we were the last ones there Sorry, i missed you. But, people left out of there quick. There was a lot of folks there when we got there, but they left pretty quickly.

Ron, I will give ya what I know. There are only a few dogs that I have any "inside scoop" on. Roll White Twist
Brett, any talk on yesterday's runs?
Neil, What do you know? There is a lot of time and dogs to go, so to guess anything now would be pure speculation. But 10 finds is tough to overcome. A couple years ago when Whipporwill Wild Agin won, that was not the "word around the stables" either...that is why this is fun (and nerve racking) to follow!Neil wrote:That is not the word around the stables, but then they are almost always wrong. In The Shadow I believe is out of Miller's White Powder x Doerr's Claire's Shadow, she by Joe Shadow and a Silverwood bitch......making him and Distant Shadow littermates.....that's what I was told anyways.......

Re: 2010 National Bird Dog Championship
I stand corrected. Someone told me he was Miller bred. I guess he is on the top, but bottom is Joe Shadow. Actually, a friend of mine has a littermate to those dogs(In the Shadow and Distant Shadow). My buddy, Blake Kukar own's a dog called Ben Adams who's bred exactly the same as those dogs.
PntrRookie wrote,
I did hear from a buddy that In the Shadow had a good go of it. But, he may be partial about the breeding. Did look like he found birds throughout the 3 hours though and i heard he had a nice forward ground race as well. I'd have to say he set the bar there.
PntrRookie wrote,
I haven't really talked to many folks about the running. Doug Arthur didn't even ride when his two dogs ran because he was so disgusted with the ice/snow situation. I talked with Charlie Frank last night for a bit. I wouldn't ever ask him which dogs they were carrying to the end. I would never do that. He would never tell me anyhow, but i would never ask.Brett, any talk on yesterday's runs?

Ron,
I'm right there with you, now that Snowatch is out. I'm hoping for a "Happy Jack Day"!!!! Not sure how he's been running lately, but know he's held his own earlier in the year...... At any rate, those "white dogs" are hard to beat!

Re: 2010 National Bird Dog Championship
Talked to Nathan again today... Apparently JIll's grand-daddy is putting on a show out there... and if I'm right Ellie's Daddy put on a heck of a derby show a couple weeks ago....
Nathan was pretty dang excited when I talked to him earlier today, sounds like all the hard work and customer relations are really starting to pay dividends... I would suggest Nathan Phillips to anyone who wants the most intelligent and athletic dog around...
My current pointer Jill knows if she wins on saturday, she wakes up with me on Sunday... Love that dog!!! She ran/rode the new ranger with me and the other dogs for 2 hrs yesterday playing in the snow...
BTW, I'm Nathan Phillips from now on...
Buyer Beware: You might beat your buddies so bad, you wont have a hunting buddy anymore....

Sorry we missed you too, we were there until they started puttin the beer up so we figured we had overran our invitation. I was roaming around the museum for the last hour or so. Good food and beverages!!!
We rode in the gallery for the morning braces Friday and Saturday and had a blast. We drove the roads and watched the action from multiple spots along the roads during the evening braces Thursday and Friday. Thursday was the day to ride it seems!!! Two great performances!!!
I was pulling for the shags, even though I like em all, but they didn't have too good of a day today. We just got home about 30 minutes ago so I gotta go unpack and get wound down.
If anyone needs contact info for a wrangler to rent horses send me a PM and I'll get you his number!

Re: 2010 National Bird Dog Championship
Rob,
Quail are bad to run and flush wild in the snow and are about 3 times harder to find, and crusty snow is really tough on the dog's feet. Many of the dogs Tuesday and Wednesday morning were leaving bloody tracks. Plus snow will cake up on the dogs tail even worse than mud, it is like they are carrying an anchor.
They run tomorrow morning and I will bet money neither will be in contention.
I am sure they are concerned about gong into the 3rd week, and I understand, but it is just eliminating dogs that aren't given a chance to win.
Neil
