Yeah, a lot of us are on Steve Snell's mailing list! The biggest changes were on the DC 30. However the nicest thing so far is that collar changes have been fully compatible with prior Astro 220 units.

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
Neil,
Do you know how the four digit code for the new collar is selected and entered with the older Astro 220s?

I am actually going to break down and get one now, I like the fact that it can be added to the same strap as the e collar.

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
The DC 40 appears to be set up with the collar receiver underneath the neck and a whip antenna wrapped around one side with the end facing up. There is no longer a puck between the receiver & the antenna so a regular nylon collar can be used. The antenna needs to be secured to the collar through a hole in the collar. Both the e-collar & DC 40 receivers would likely be against one another underneath the neck with neither receiver squarely at the bottom. At least that's the way the set-up looks in pictures I've seen.ACooper wrote:I am actually going to break down and get one now, I like the fact that it can be added to the same strap as the e collar.

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
Looks like it'd require a software download from Garmin's webside through a computer USB connection. I've sent them a question to ask if the software is already available & if there is a charge for the download. I know there is a charge to download an updated map into your vehicle's Garmin navigator.BigShooter wrote:Neil,

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
I am told there will be no charge for the update (it is true they charge for updated maps), but they do not currently charge to up date the handheld, which they say should be done every 6 months or so.
You actually will have to put the e-collar on the Astro (unless you want to do a lot of needless work), and it is true the e-collar receiver will be off-set to the side of the neck some, but should not be a problem.

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
I waited for them to come out- got the 220/ DC20- melted wheel weights for a counter ballance- 3 years and only one antenea- quite happy- it looks like new- maybe something about being on top of the neck- I like it there
got the DC30 collar- frayed a bit after the seasons, no big deal, super glue and a lighter- it works as well as the DC20
purchased 2 DC20's from a fella here for $100.00
advantage- I can put a DC20 on just about any collar- and if with someone else I can slip one on their ecollar
folks wanted new and improved- they came out with DC40- wonder how much better it is at finding your dog than the DC20
one thing- everybody unhappy with their 20's, then 30's, maybe it'll allow someone with not much money to pick one up real cheap
advantage- more money for Garmin and distributors- lots of discontinued for a bargin- lots of hunters will buy and use them
advantage hunter- advantage dog

Re: New Garmin DC40 collar
Looks Similar to the DC20 with the aftermarket whip antenna on it. Where the DC20 rides under the neck just as this does. Looks a little tight in putting e-collar right next to it under the dogs neck. Not the balanced set up of the DC20 w/e-collar, or the DC30 w separate e-collar. IMHO
Like that they made is into one unit and no puck on top. Will still use separate e-collar. I usually take off regular flat collar when I run dogs. All my collars have name plates on them.
