New bird pen

Post by ohiogsp » Wed Mar 01, 2006 9:06 pm

Check out my new pigeon loft. I just finished this today. This is a breeder only loft no traps or anything. I have anouther loft that is my flight pen. Here is a link to the plans I used. I used the idea from these plans but changed it alot.

Looks really good! With the pegs on the door, though, do the pigeons sit there when you open it?

Very nice indeed.
I've looked at those plans a number of times and have the link in my Fav's. Really liked the simplicity and low "apparent" cost to build the basic. Was it as easy to build as it seemed? Got any feedback on things you changed or may change? I may just build one like that yet and am curious what you do or don't like about the "basic design".

Ps. It looks like the Pigeons really like it too!

looks great I too looked at that plan before but I opted to just build a big box (8x8x8) for my birds. I do need to build a breeder loft so I might go with the same as what you have done looks real functional

Can I ask why the pegs and boxes are painted red? Just curious.

The pigeons do sit on the back of the door but fly off into the pen when I open it. If they did fly out they would probably just trap into my flight pen that is right beside this one.

It was pretty easy to build with 2 people. You could build it in a weekend. There would be extra time for perches, boxes and painting. I used all 2x4's for my built the plans use alot of 1x4 utility wood. The aviary has a wood bottom in the plans that I switched to welded wire. Also the ridge cap on mine is different because the plans have an opening in the top for the vent. Mine still has the vent but escapes from the end. The aviary opens on the plans for a trap but this is a breeder pen so I have no opening on the front. It cost about 500 dollars to build. This pen could hold 16 breeding pairs maximium.

The perches and the boxes are painted red because these were painted with a oil based floor coating paint. It only comes in colors and the red matches the roof.

Are there doors for the aviary or is it going to be open summer and winter?

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

This pen is open all the time but next winter I would put plastic over the aviary.
