Is anyone from California

Post by weim-hank » Wed Dec 22, 2010 12:12 am

Hello,

I have a four month old Weim. Im wondering if there are any clubs or places to take my puppy to train him in Ventura county?
I know that is a tall order, just hoping someone is out there.

There are a few groups around the southern Cal area Some meet there at Prado and I think some meet at rehaugies

On this board Mike Porter has made a few recent posts There is also a weim club if you look up AKC they should have a link to the CAl clubs

There are also a few other trainers Mike Eisen Carl Babbs are another two good hands in training help When people follow their lead they have very good success with their dogs ..

The weim club is having a hunt test in January I think on the 15-16 in rosemand. Might want to make it out there and bs where those guys train. I'm a little down the coast and inland. Around riverside there are a few places to train and a lot of places to let them run.

Carl babb is a good guy to get advice and help if your going to DIY, pro trainers I would talk to are Carl porter and Larry lowell. Haven't talked with too many others that deal with pointers. Try not to train off of a forum though... it will end up very bad.

Weim-hank,
There are a few clubs here in So cal. I have only been to one, four winds in Riverside, and its not bad. If you ever need a training partner, let me know, I have a 9 month old britt and gsp cross. I have also done train the trainer courses with Jim Rice, a very good trainer, too bad he moved up north. If I were you I would just take him to the LPNF and get as much wild bird contact as possible. There is alot more to getting a pup to be a great gun dog, which is why it can be difficult to train using a forum.

You have the NSTRA training trial at the end of the month. Contact Bob Thompson

There are four NAVHDA Chapters in California (see the link below). If there is one nearby find out when they will hold a training day.

If you really want direction I would commit and check out these events.... nstra on the 1,2 Jan, hunt test 15 and 16 jan, then field trial in California city the 22.. there will be board members at all of the events and its a good time. The nstra has a training trial the day before I think and there will be someone to walk you through with your.dog if you want to get into it.

The great thing about them is there are pro trainers who you can talk to and feel them out. Then think about paying for one on one lessons for you and your dog of you can't or don't want to send it to training. Just make sure that person is a true pro and not some guy with some stickers and a fake "business".

Private lessons are cheaper than paying for mistakes in training and well worth the time and drive to get there.

Carl Babbs and Mike Eisen both are very good with all kinds of temperaments from softer dog to the ones that have some pretty high drive to over drive. They also know how to help keep the style in those high drive dogs and are very patient with owners who have a hard time getting the idea.

I'm always picking Mike Eisen & Ellis Hallmarks brains at the NSTRA events. Great guys that love to talk dogs. I bought my Gator and new dog that I'll be picking up Mon from Larry Lowell. Larry also trained Gator and did an awesome job. Good luck,Troy
