Raw Eggs

Post by ChukarCountry » Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:26 pm

What are your guy’s thoughts on feeding your gundogs raw eggs? I have a neighbor that gives us free eggs I have always feed them to my dogs. They seem to like them. Are there any benefits to this?

Thanks

Eggs are a great source of protein but feeding them raw there is the chance of giving your dogs salmonella.

Mine get raw eggs at least 3 times a week. I don't think the incidence of salmonella in dogs is very high - but that's purely a guess on my part. The beagles particularly love the raw eggs and they eat shell and all - good calcium for them too.

The yolks are excellent, the whites actually may do as much harm as good and I would be careful about giving the dogs the shells as it is possible to do some damage to the throat area with the sharp edges. Don't think it happens often but I have seen it twice and it just is something to think about. They are good calcium and if you want to mash them it should be fine. However, there are other good and cheap sources of the calcium the dogs need. But the fat in the yolk is a wonderful feed for conditioning the dog.

Growig up on a farm, feeding whole raw eggs was just a no no as it was an excellent way to get a dog started eating eggs and the consequences of that was not real pleasant.

You would have to feed a dog raw whole eggs almost exclusively for a long period of time to risk a biotin deficiency because there is biotin in the yolk. If you are worried lightly sunny-side the egg. Once the white is cooked there is no risk. Eggs have the highest biological value of any protein so feed them if you have them.

Thanks for the info. I have been thinking of getting some of my own chickens and I thought that feeding the excess eggs to my dogs would be a good use of the resource and good for my pointers. Though every once in awhile I will boil the eggs just to give the dogs something different.

They are an expensive feed by the time you buy the chicks and have to feed them.

I feed raw eggs all the time. Raw eggs (I give the egg shell too) are a great source of protein and are great for the skin and coat. There is no danger to feeding your dog raw eggs. Raw eggs are a very healthy food to give to your dog.

I eat the eggs, give the shells to the pigeons for calcoum, and feed the dog the dog food. Seriously the yolk is great for a dog but the whites are not. You can get by feeding the whole egg but much better to just feed the yolk.

Whats wrong with the whites? Isn't the protein in the white? Fat in the yolk? Back in the day when I had gamefowl I would feed a raw egg every feeding and never had a problem. Coats were fantastic.

The uncooked white of the egg can cause a biotin deficiency and it is also hard to digest, and for people with bearded dogs very messy.
