Hunting Two Dogs

Post by 3Britts » Mon Nov 07, 2011 4:45 pm

A while back, a member asked if anyone hunted more than one dog at a time.
Well today, I had two of my Brittanys out pheasant hunting and here is one of the most beautiful visions ever.
We had been out for about two hours, just about time to head home, when my Britts started a crossing pattern on
a wild bird. They zig-zagged each other until the bird was nailed to one spot. I then flushed the pheasant but did not shoot
as it was a hen. But watching Ron and Summer work a bird so perfectly, made the day worth it.
Yes, I hunt more than one dog at a time.

I hunt my lab and english setter together all the time. In fact this past week I often hunted with 5 dogs at a time.

Hunting two dogs together offers a lot of consistent results for me, but there are times when the unusual happens that it just reminds me how well two dogs can actually work together. Here is a picture I took last week of my setter backing my lab. I had the camera out so I could get some action shots of my dogs hunting, but instead I was treated to this surprise. My lab stopped on a woodcock and was holding the bird when my setter came across and stopped in front of me.

3 dogs - a GSP & Griffon backing a GWP.

I've been running both my dogs together this season. It's been a lot of fun - twice as much fun as only running one dog!

I hunt two dogs down most of the time, any more than that and I think it can get a little hectic.
