Run Off Bandit – Not good

We had a young GSP take chase after a herd of deer this morning, not sure if she has caught them yet. We put blankets down where we turned the dogs out. I hope the youngster is there in the morning. This kind of thing puts a knot in my stomach. The sad thing is this is the 4th time this year. This is a friend’s dog. I know how to fix the problem, but it is not my dog. I have offered suggestions however.

Trash breaker would work just fine. Why didn't the dog have an ecollar on??

The youngster is not mine and it had an ecollar on, however the handler didn't check the collar before putting it on the dog (I always check mine) it appears that it was not working.

That's horrid. Hopefully the pup is there in the morning. Perhaps it's time to convince them of getting a garmin.

That was the only thing I could not reliably train before I got an e-collar. Now I never worry about the dogs and deer.

The sad thing is I knew there was an issue with this dog and I had a second astro collar in my truck I could have put on the dog. I wasn't hunting over to dog but I could have found it with a bit of time, just makes me sick.

Good news,

the little dog was on her blanket when I got on the ridge. She was scared, cold and hungry but other than that she is in good shape. I already had a conversation with the owner on what needs to be done. This made my day!!!

I’m taking the rest of the day to help my wife make tamales.

I have never had to loose one, I have lost my EP for a few hours when he chased deer but nothing to extreme.

Well, I lost one for about an hour at a hunt test chasing deer (nice of him to be so public about it ya know... in front of like 40 people :roll:

) but there was a road he ran across and I was sick to my stomach the whole time. Thankfully got him back... and then some serious HELLO ECOLLAR sessions have helped.

So glad the dog came back!!!!

Glad to hear your friend got his dog back! I'd worry about coyotes around here... When my EP was only about 8 months I had her out and she ran smack into a fawn... That fawn kicked the crap outta her and she was yelpin like crazy!

She's never even stopped to sniff a fresh track since!

Still scared to death of deer... I was lucky I guess!

Had a companion lose a pricey GSP pup last season. He did have a collar on but it was one of those $150 Cabela's cheapies that are good for only one jolt at most. She took off after a couple mule deer when we were hunting around standing corn. We left her kennel there with the door off after searching well into the night and returned the next day. We found her dead on the road a mile away, got ran over at night.

Cheap ecollars... you will pay one way or the other. I see quite a few new hunting dog owners trying to save a few bucks on the collar. A good collar is the best hunting dollar you will ever spend.

GPS collar with a trash breaker. Two mile range on the TB and 8 miles on the GPS.

Tri tronics collar with a 2 mile range. Used to stop chasing. If they run through the power setting in hot pursuit you have up to two miles. The dog prob wouldn't make it over 100 yds though with the collar on 6 and holding constantly

Great to hear you got the dog back, I know how you feel about giving advise to another man, however I now make sure everyone checks their collars before we go out, can't see messing up everyones day because a man makes mistakes. Been doing this to long now to look for dogs, we have way to many Bear, Coyotes and big cats here. Have not had to retrieve a dog the next morning for many many years, we now test every collar before we turn the dogs loose. We take my Expadition as we train or hunt and I make the men test every collar on each dog, before the dog is released, it saves a lot of grief. Real glad you got the dog back.

I don't think ANYTHING would make it through a 6 constant. I tried the tri-tronics on a 3 low on my neck and that was the highest I could go.

It's a good idea with any type electronic transmitting device to take the manufacturers stated range and cut it in 1/2. They always advertise the max range which may work if your dog is running down an airport runway, but that is rarely the "average" or effective range. If you want 200 yards get a 400 if you want 400 get the 800.

I use the Dogtra or DT, T&B Collar which has both beeper and shock portion to the Collar, these quality collars work really well here in our Pa mountains.
