Kennel Setups

Post by Setters4ever » Mon Jan 23, 2012 4:04 pm

I am considering starting a small kennel for English setters. I am curious what kennel sizes, flooring, deluded, ect people have/use. Pictures would be great.
I live in NY so weather is a concern too. It can get around -11 without wind chill which where I live is very strong in the winter.

check the website for Mason kennels. They have a booklet with lots of plans and suggestions. Product is expensive but high quality and last . They can give you some good ideas.

If you do a kennel building make it only one side with your runs facing south or to the sunny side......we have kennels on two sides and while nice and shady on the north side in summer they stay wet and frozen in winter and thats down here in De, i imagine it would be worse up north.
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

Nice site. Wish I'd known you raise chick's. I just ordered a couple weeks ago. I though you just had a kennel. You should put game birds in your signature too.
Your price is second best by only a few pennies. The guy I ordered from was found by accident. Was planning to have to pay $1+ for day olds. If I hear of anyone else looking I'll send them to you.

Cotton, Very nice setup. What kind of houses are those? Uplanders?

That is a heck of a setup. I just noticed that when it rains, HighCotton gets his kennel floors cleaned by the man above. Pretty smart.

S4E,
My training kennels are in the Pa forest, made of 8' - 10' high Chain Link Fencing with 6 holding pens, one large dog shed and numerous
dog houses. We also have the Petsafe invisable fence that surrounds the entire kennel so the dogs have extra freedom in the forest.
Eventually we will concrete the 35 yard X 25 yard kennels. Not an inexpensive construction job, it does get the job done very very well.

One of the other items you will need for your kennel operation is a Dog Shower and Grooming station.

Here is my kennel setup. We are going to be changing to Welded wire. Not sure if I will switch to a two run set up or keep it 10x10.

The houses are Dog Den 2's from Gun Dog Supply. They are well insulated and really are chew proof. The negatives are the galvanized tops and floor panels will rust over time. I ended up putting a good coat of truck bed liner paint on mine and it solved the problem.

Since my kennel is connected to the city sewer system I can't use any type bedding (for fear of clogging the drain). I have heavy rubber door mats from Tractor Supply on the floors of the houses so the dogs don't have to lie directily on the metal floors. The size of the house is adequate for my setters but small enough for the dogs body heat to keep them warm.

I think they have heated floor panels (as an option) for kennels in colder climates but they are not needed here in Alabama.

One of them has the rubber coated scott kennel flooring. I think it is the best but it is about $50 for a 24in by 36in piece. One of them appears to be a large, little heavier duty grill grate. It is good for adult dogs but some puppies get their toes stuck. One of them is expanded medal. The rest are flooring from a hog confinement building, they are ok but still have to be cleaned out.

Thanks birdog3412 i bought a sheet of the expanded metal they had four types, i think i picked the one least likely to injure. I have yet to assemble it. It was only around 40$ for a 4x8 sheet. I also considered oak planks from wood pallets for flooring. I currently have concrete runs but the drainage inside my barn prevents washing it down four times a day like it needs.
