opinon on scented dummies
I was wondering if there is any harm in letting my pup carry around her scented dummies in the back yard and sometimes in the house. She is in love with them and likes to carry them around whereever she goes. Is it ok to do this or should I only let her see and play with her dummies when we are in the field. Does it really matter? Thanks

Carry or hold is a good thing to learn. Keep away or chewing is a bad thing. Kinda need more info from you.

Shes a 6 month old English (Field) Cocker. She carries them around in her mouth. I don't let her chew on them. So far, she hasn't tried to chew them up and I watch her closely when there in her mouth. The dummies I use are just the plain white canvas and I have put a little phesant scent on them. One of them with weighted with sand in it. I've just heard some people say that the dummies should only be introduced and assoicated with hunting and the field and not at home.

The scent probably doesn't do a thing, she just like's to carry things, let her. But be sure that you can call it off when you want to; call her in and have her give it to you. When you do that, don't just put it up, throw a few for her to fetch first. You don't and she gonna figure out that coming to you and giving it to you means game over! Then find her something else she likes to carry around and put the training tool away. Or let her keep that one to do as she will and get a different tool to train with. One that looks, feels and smells different.

It won't hurt a thing but the scent is of no benefit.

I can't say whether it is right or wrong for you but I don't let pups treat dummies purely as toys. If they pick up a dummy then I want it brought to me. I provide a knotted rope toy for pups to play with and they can do whatever they like with that...... they usually kill it stone dead !

My wife says she likes "old spice" on me the best... as for the dog... my Lab slept with his scented dummy, but I always made sure when I told him to "bring it here" or "give it to me" he did without any hesitation... My EP carries around one of my dirty socks... go figgure... as long as she doesn't chew it up, I don't care, but we never let any dog play the "keep away" or "tug of war" game...
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

on a side note about scented dummies... do they work? I have never trained an upland dog but am about to start. Would you recommend using them? if so how would I go about it? Thanks!
