Is training a pointer to sit after he or she completes the here command or completes a retireve going to give me trouble whoa breakin,or get a good point. when i trained my lab 10+ year ago i away in force her to sit after she was called and sit after the retireve just wonder if this is a bad habit to instill into my young britt

I may be wrong but teaching a sit is almost essential for a dog that lives in the house. If your plan is to participate in trials/tests then sitting after a retrieve etc. is not a good idea - so I am told.

We've talked about this so many times before you might check old threads. Many folks with pointing dogs train their dogs to sit with no problems. Others wait until the dog is broken or steady on a point until you release the dog, after that they train sit.
I & others do not recommend training a pointing dog to sit because a number of the pointing dogs then will sit when they are pressured during the breaking process. We don't want our pointing dogs to sit down when pressured instead of standing still on a point. Instead we teach the dog to stand perfectly still when commanded. Most people use the word whoa. Properly trained the dog should stop instantly on command wherever they are and stand perfectly still which will work just fine when they are in the house or when training for retrieves but much is a matter of preference and training technique.

Whoa is better than sit. I prefer neither. I share my food.

I am training my britt to point right now and the only time I make her sit is when I feed her in the house and when she gets a treat. With the treats in the field I give her one every so offen on the HERE command. It seems to work for me but what works better is the STAY command. For example when the dog starts chassing the cat I give her the here command make her fallow me to her day bed. Most times she jumps right in it and then give the stay comand. You want your dog to know that most of the same rules and commands apply to inside and outside.

When dogs are confused they will revert to what they know best or learned last. When training a dog to whoa that has had sit first will invariably lead to a dog that will sit when being commanded on whoa. It is just another thing to deal with . I like to make whoa bomb proof first ,that way when the dog is learning any new behavior the worst thing that will happen is you have a dog that is standing still.A dog that sits under pressure is sitting because it is confused about the command and is being prematurely pressured. A dog should be 80% positively responding to a command before any pressure is used. If a dog is sitting on the whoa command it is offering a behavior because it believes that is the behavior that will get the reward, this is not a time for correction ,it is a time to teach the command. A simple eh eh will suffice at this time , then show the dog what you want.
