Help !?
* Thread Previously Titled "New to Retriever Hunt Tests"
I've read through the AKC manual a few times, but I keep thinking of things I haven't figured out.
And since I've never even BEEN to a hunt test, I'm at quite a disadvantage.
For example:
Can one dog compete in both a Junior and Senior Hunting test at the same event?
Also, when I look at the event schedules, many events are scheduled for 2 days. I understand that Master tests require a 2 day event.
But do they also do Junior level for 2 days? If so, does that mean that a dog can receive 2 qualifying scores over the course of a weekend?
Thanks for the help, more questions to come.

Re: Help !?
Pick an event close to you and call or e-mail the event secretary. They will either be able to answer your questions or direct you to someone who can.

Re: Help !?
My Question is, if you have a dog that compete in a senior hunt test why waste the money on a Jr. title??
And yes, If I remember from my hunt test days (which was a LOOOOOOOONG time ago) They run a test on both days for all levels (usually) and you can qualify on both day's.

You may enter your dog in any event you wish. However, getting a leg is another matter.CalebMitchell wrote:* Thread Previously Titled "New to Retriever Hunt Tests"

We run HT for both days on the weekend. So yes, if a dog is entered in the same event both days, h/s could earn 2 qualifying scores.
AFAIK no one Test requires a multiple day event. What IS required is to qualify in multiple legs to earn the title. (For example, you need four legs in JH to get a JH title.)

Re: Help !?
Thanks, guys.
During a two day event do you usually have to pay one entrance fee or two?
Example:
JH Saturday
JH Sunday
Entrance fee: $65
Would I have to pay $65 or $130?
$65 for 4 retrieves... ouch.

Considering that a chukar costs about seven or eight bucks, four birds would cost you between 28 and 32 bucks. At a preserve, you can double that and you gotta shoot the birds yourself. Now go find two guys with horses to watch you and your dog for a half hour, two guys and their guns and shells to plant the birds and shoot them for your dog, someone to plant two or three quail on course(at about four bucks per quail), insurance for the particiapnts, someone to pay a whole lot of fees, fill out and send in paperwork to the AKC, etc, etc, etc,....
Well... I think you get the idea. Putting on any kind of event ain't cheap.
How much does it cost to go to a NASCAR race for the day? How about a pro football or pro basketball game?
Nobody likes it, but stuff costs waaaaay more today than it used to. I am pretty sure that at $65 per entry, the club is just about breaking even, especially when you consider that if the weather turns foul, they may have to cancel the event and eat all the up front expenses.

I don't understand your reference to an entrance fee. Do you mean the fee to run your dog in JH?CalebMitchell wrote:Thanks, guys.

Yes, you have to pay a separate fee for each event you enter. That being said, I think $65 for JH is pretty steep.
Also, the dog does not retrieve in JH. SH & MH, yes; JH, no.

I am referring to a Retriever JH test. What do you mean the dog doesn't retrieve?
Thanks.

Re: Help !?
Best thing would probably enter the dog and send the secretary a email explaining you have a idea but have never attended and would like to be braced towards the end.. if they are nice that's great if they don't are rude then that's ok too. Just expect it to be a learning expierence although some people make it seem harder than it is

I figured this was what I was going to have to do, but was hoping that I could get enough info on the forum not too.ultracarry wrote:Best thing would probably enter the dog and send the secretary a email explaining you have a idea but have never attended and would like to be braced towards the end.. if they are nice that's great if they don't are rude then that's ok too. $130 for 8 retrieves 200 miles away is one heck of an expensive "learning experience".
