In the blink of an eye
In the blink of an eye
I lost my 2 year old EP today. Gump was a Fibber/Lancelot cross. He was easy to train, biddable, and birdy, extremely birdy. He made himself MY dog from the time we got him, always sitting or laying beside whereever I was in the house or yard.
I took him and my other dog on a short boat ride today, I do it a couple of times a week and both know their place in the boat, they sit or stand on the floor. They don't get on the bowcap until I release them. Today for whatever reason (maybe a bird flew by or some scent from the marsh) Gump leaped on the bow and went over.
I had turned my head to look over at a friends house and all I saw was his legs going over, felt the thump and spun around, he was swimmimg to the boat but water was bright red.
He had two massive prop cuts in his rib cage and punctured lungs. I wasn't 1.4 mile from the house. I got him home and put him down.
I've had dogs put down due to age or serious illness but have never had to do this.
I'm just tore up.

I never know what to say when I hear of dogs passing no matter under what circumstances.
Sorry never seems like enough but I know how it feels,it hurts!
Hang in there.

Had one jump out of the truck once, he made it but it was a wake up for me. Now they ride in a dog box or on a leash. Sorry for your loss, dogs dont live long enough as it is.

Re: In the blink of an eye
Thank you all for your kind words. My wife and I went to Wingo Kentucky in May 2011 to pick up Gump, it was a whirlwind 2200 mile trip.
I've read on here about having a dog that thinks the sun rises and set on you, well that is what happened with Gump. I have never had a dog that was so eager to please.
He picked up heel and whoa pretty quick and was pointing on scent and backing on a judas dog last spring. He had been introduced to gunfire and knew that gunshots meant fun even though I have never shot a bird over him. I was saving that for this season as he still had so much puppy in him.
Gump would take my shirt when I was getting dressed in the mornings and go sit by my chair with my shirt waiting for me to say give, he was pretty sneaky ay snaking up into the bed too.
Gump owned me, not vice-versa

So sorry, man, I feel for you, that had to be horrible. Just one of those fluke and unfair deals. Has to hurt.
Had a buddy whose hardhead Brittany did the same thing, but his prop slice was across his head and they were able to wrap him up and get him stitched up. No way you could have done anything with your boy.

Sorry for your loss. Gump was a good lookin' dog, cherish the memories.
Re: In the blink of an eye
My thanks to all who posted. As I get older I sometimes wonder if the joy is worth the pain, did a lot of that this week.
A friend told me that we walk a fine line in doing things that give our dogs pleasure and keeping them too safe, just as we do the same for ourselves and to not realize that is foolish.
I'm glad that I hunt my dogs, for the rewards(for them and me) far exceeds the risk and I'm glad that Gump got to boat ride as he throughly enjoyed it.

I know exactly what you mean. I lost my 5 year old male 3 weeks ago. As much joy as he gave me, the pain is by far worse. I know your pain too well.asc wrote:My thanks to all who posted. As I get older I sometimes wonder if the joy is worth the pain, did a lot of that this week....
