How long do you feed puppy food

Post by Munster » Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:19 am

My pup is 15 weeks old and my vet is already telling me to switch her to adult.

Now, I am no body to question the vet, but it sounds a little odd to me. But I am also wondering what it would hurt. Less protien in adult food, slow her growth? Hmmm. Ezzy, what say you!

Mary, I would switch anytime. I like the little slower growth and better stools you will get. Puppy food is good to get them started eating but once they are I prefer the adult food.

Thanks Ezzy! I knew I could count on ya!

Funny, Iwas reading about foods today. I had always been told that Chicken or Beef or any animal listed as first ingredient is the way to go. Now I read today that Chicken Meal, or Beef Meal has more in it then the actual listed Chicken. They say that when the chicken is cooked down it is 80 % water. But Chciken meal has 300% more protein then the chicken? They sure know how to get you confused!

With Labs, most of us go with Large Breed Puppy food until 12 to 14 months of age.

The difference is that chicken is still fresh while the meal has been dried and the large amount of water discarded. I think when most people say start with meat of some type they are normally relating to a meal product. But in all honesty meat as a first ingredient does not mean it is better than one with grain as a first ingredient. But most of us still look for it.

I found this food called Nuti Life Gold. The ingredience look pretty good and the price is right. 40 pounds for 40 bucks. We shall see how it goes. It is a 24 14 food. I just wish they had a higher protien food for my male. He is on 30/20 and still looks like heck!

Ezzy, would be nice to run into you sometime. :D

X2 Munster I think Ezzy would have a wealth of information for us less experienced dog folks. I would love to spend a few hours with him.

Very nice to hear things like that but believe me I would enjoy it and learn as much from you all. Anytime any of you are in the area would love to have you stop and spend some time.

There are tons of good to great feeds out there from pricy to not too bad, you just need to do some research, find out what is good for your dog find out what is available locally and stick with it. Try not to be someone who changes feeds every bag or 2 because this other feed that is kinda close on ingredients and protein fat ratio is 3 bucks cheaper this week. Keep your dog on a constant feed unless it is not working out for your dog, and most feeds work out just fine.
We as a people have collectively came to a conclusion that if it is expensive it has to be better, sometimes some of the better feeds are right down the middle of the price line feeds.

I will choose the "meat meal" over "meat" every time. As far as puppy food goes, I never feed it. I feed adult feed from the beginning. If I was a breeder, I would probably do as Topher said and feed them puppy food for the first couple of weeks or to get them started as Ezzy said. But when I get them at 8 wks. old or so, they are put on adult food.

Ezzy is a great guy, very hospitable and a pleasure to be around. Of course, as usual, that is JMO :P . You should look him up sometime. It doesn't look like either one of you are all that far away. I am sure you would be welcome and I am betting he would enjoy it as much as you.

I have a 10 month old setter raised on pro plan puppy. He is looking so good I may leave him on it and put my adults on it also. First three ingredients are chicken, rice and poultry by product so it may be more meat based then some of their other formulas. He is more muscled than the adults on native level 3.

Thanks. Obviously genetics plays a big part but he is growing nicely on the puppy formula.

Anyone ever switch to senior food, or just stick with adult food?

Everyone switches at some point. I normally just start puppies on the same food the other dogs are eating and it has always worked well.

I never feed puppy food. I have read a lot of articles about how puppy food is a manufactures bread and butter. Most talked about the only difference is the size of the kibble. I feed the same thing to everything. No problems.

I've fed some of my pups puppy foods and others adult. They all grew fine.
