I have 2 Setters, both live in the house. I would not mind having 3 but my wife might think differently.

Re: How many is to many?
We have 7 Brittanys ranging in age from 16 months to 13 yrs old.
They're all house dogs, although we have a "dog room" in our basement where they all stay when we're not home and to sleep. It has crates for everyone and dog doors to the yard, so they can come and go all day.

Re: How many is to many?
Right now I have 4 pointers. That is the number I do not want to exceed, going forward. My son's pointer comes down for the occasional visit so there is a fifth kennel available for him.
They are all "outside" dogs in 5X10 kennels that are situated inside a fairly large fenced in back yard(approx 80X100).

This is the operative question. I have had from 2-6 housedogs (not counting puppies),but will admit that the higher end of that was too many. Now two wirehairs, which is the right number for me. But again, they are full-time housedogs and office dogs. Have never had kennels and don't want them. Speaking only personally. ymmv.
Re: How many is to many?
The setter and the shorthair live in the house. The two pointers live in the kennel. Open air on concrete with a washout and drain. Currently set up with two 10 x 10 runs and a 5 x10 run. Plastic barrels for dog houses. I don't think it makes sense to have two dogs in the house while I have an open kennel but the wife thinks that those two are special or something. The pointers come in the house every now and then and they are great in the house. I start all my little puppies in the house.Allin13 wrote:Where are you guys keeping them? 6 pointers with a litter on the way. All outside in kennels.
Re: How many is to many?
I have two, one being a black lab and the other being an english setter. I'm thinking of breeding my setter when she comes into heat as she's proven to be a good trial dog and excellent grouse dog, and if I do I may keep a pup. Three would be my max since they are and will be house dogs. I think two is easier than one.
Re: How many is to many?
Like slistoe, we have 3 Britts and a Lab. All hunt, and they are from 3 to 10 years old. Four in the house, and four to keep fit and train is enough for me. When we are down to 2 dogs, we likely will look for a PP or DD (or another Lab, or another Britt, or maybe a setter, or even maybe a Springer Spaniel, or maybe......).
Re: How many is to many?
1 Britt, and 1 Yorkshire. The Yorkie doesn't really count because she's basically like a cat in that she minds her own business, stays under the bed, and comes out to eat, whens he hears car keys, and go for a walk.
My Britt is an 11 month old handful. He is rowdy and messy and stubborn, but he's super sweet. I think he should count as 2 dogs.
So, 3.

Ditto. Plus, I count the beagles as a "pack" - so no individual counting there!
Used to have 10, I'm down from that now. 4 birddogs inside and a few duck dogs outside. Fosters come and go as well.

Re: How many is to many?
I'm currenty rolling with 4 dogs....a britt, a GSP, a DD and a American Bull Dog....The wife swears that she wants a boston terrier....And i doubt i can make it another full year without adding another FT/Upland dog to the pack...
The american bull dog hangs outside loose during the day, the shorthair has a outdoor kennel, the britt and DD in another kennel. Kennels covered with dog boxes and water....All dogs come in when we get home and sleep in crates inside.

Re: How many is to many?
I Have 5x 20 kennel runs, about 2 acres fenced and most of the dogs rotate through house time and kennel time. The senior lab is off kennel rotation and inside the house of in the yard when warm. The young lab is also spoiled and gets more than his share of house time. He has never spent the night in the kennel I dont think
1 is outside only and 1 is VERY HYPER and is outside unless I am getting weight on his skinny self or he is very tired from multi -day hunts. I always have a few boarders or training dogs in also. Try to keep no more than 2-3 inside at once...

Re: How many is to many?
The most I ever had was 17, that was way way to many.
I have two now and the potential for one more this fall, three should be plenty.
Of course I am not counting the misses two house dogs.

Re: How many is to many?
I have three dogs:
1- GSP 11 months old
2- Vizslas that are 4 and 3 years old
My wife is starting to like the GSP, but still thinks she is a crazy dog when she runs loose in the house. All three hunt, and I am trying out the field trial idea with the youngest.

What I can tell you is that 1 female in season is too many, 2 is crazy and 3 is unbearable. UGH!!!
Re: How many is to many?
Four vizslas, a litter of vizsla pups, three Irish setters and a fair number of pigeons.
Re: How many is to many?
4 setters
1 jagdterrier ( like a JRT on crack, so should get extra credit for her )
4 horses
The dogs live in the house.
The horses have their own digs

I have 11
1 rescue britt 1/2 aussie 1/2 brittany
1 springer
5 male britts
4 female britts
my first britt a nutered male "the old man", the rescue britt, springer and a spayed female spend the night inside. The rest stay in 5, indoor / outdoor kennels that are 12X6 outside and 4X6 indoors.
I want to trim the males down to 3 if I can find good hunting homes for them.

The two that I am considering to rehome are both STW&S but lack competition range. If you have interest let's continue the discussion with PM's so we don't disrupt the thread.Brazosvalleyvizslas wrote:AZ, what level are your males at and how much do you want for them? Sorry to hijack.

4 GSPs 2 males-2 females
1 male Mastiff (to protect strangers from the GSPs!)
I have plans for two more GSPs within a year or so. Then I'll be good for awhile.

Re: How many is to many?
Last fall I had 3, but my old lab passed on at 15. I currently have a shorthair that will be 6 yrs in July and one that turns 4 yrs in a month--and I hope to bring the pack back up to 3 dogs again this year.
