Appropriately placed mouse traps work very well.
It'll hurt but not injure.

Unless the dog chews one up and swallows pieces. Putting the food away and using a crate is safer if the dog must be inside at mealtime.

Mouse traps should ONLY be used while you can supervise.

Haha I always say, if I'm too tired or lazy to put the food away.... It was going in the trash. Might as well let the dog have a treat. I don't try to train for something that's 100% under my control.

Now finished plates on the coffee table.... Its the pre- rinse cycle.

If you can catch him in the act, use the ecollar. Don't say a word and shock him on high. Will only take a couple times for him to get the message.

DO NOT PUT FOOD WHERE THE DOG CAN GET IT.

Sort of like picking up you dirty socks and underware.

My puppy likes my wife's $80 black lace bra's.

He does not even have to really get on, he has been able to get anything off the counter since 5 months old or so, baby gates went up soon after. We are just re-abilitating him to the rest of the house again.

When I was a boy, our Old English Sheepdog ate 12 dozen Christmas cookies that my Mother had made for the church social... She hated that dog after that! Lol... I still think my Dad had some too...

Ha Ha, baby gates and mouse traps............kinda like the kinder gentler military  . One well placed a$$ kicking and it will end. Max experienced this after eating 3 8 oz ribeyes.

Kinder, gentler, military, marine.... no matter what I do to him, the benefits outweigh the punishment. Counter surfing is one of the truly rewarding experiences a dog can enjoy himself. There is almost always a positive to counter surfing - even if he gets the snot beat out of him for doing it - the pizza, cookies, etc. provide instantaneous reward. My smartest dog still counter surfs - and he gets a wailing if I catch him. I've just learned to put things up. Mousetraps didn't work, e-collar didn't work, a modified "beating" didn't work...even the husband getting after him didn't work. Too much benefit in it I guess. I live with it. I don't like it, but I live with it.

I have a collar so if I can time it right i'll give him a nick, but punishment, if I catch him up, do I just do the stern No and pin him to the ground by the neck thing.

The dog shouldn't associate you (as with a command) with the surfing.
The dog needs to think that it was the surfing that caused the 'punishment'.

So maybe, some bait , and the boy's ice fishing camera(remote viewing) and a nick when he goes up?
