A question about a puppy thing
A question about a puppy thing
A guy picked up his puppy, went home to another state, noticed the pup when in tall grass gets wobbly and falls over, when put back on the driveway he is fine and doesn't show this behavior. Any one ever run into this? He will take the pup to a vet but I am really curious what is going on. Thanks for any reply's any of you can offer, I have never seen this.

That is strange. It seems as though it may be a vertigo type thing if seen in a human. I know the ears are what give us balance. I assume in other mammals as well. I really don't know, but would be very interested to find out. Possibly a inner ear infection??? Prayers to the pup that it won't be no big deal!
Re: A question about a puppy thing
pup is 8 weeks old. I suspect ear infection. I am waiting to hear from the owner. I had the pup out in short mowed lawn for a couple weeks he didn't show any of this, the owner has bonded with the pup too. So I guess I will wait to hear back from him. These pups are really nice, my boy was hoping one would not sell so he could have it.

Re: A question about a puppy thing
How tall/thick is the grass? I've had young pups do the same thing because the grass is too tall or thick for them to efficiently get through and fall down because they are tired. If he's trying to get the pup to go through something similar, tell him to back down a little on the cover he's running the puppy in.

that is very strange. I know we think ears when there are questions of balance, but it makes me wonder about his eyes. it might be that on open ground he can see well enough to know up from down, but in the tall grass with a limited field of view he can't. just a thought.
Re: A question about a puppy thing
I had a husky in college. When he was 9-10 weeks old and was running through grass/weeds ( probably about 18" ) he just stopped laid down and started shaking. He was fine and never had any health issues. I always figured it was a combo of being tired and maybe over stimulation.
Re: A question about a puppy thing
Good thought, except I have vertigo at least once a year and it is accompanied with nausea and the terrain makes no difference. Let us know what the vet says please Mark.tannerismyhero wrote:That is strange. It seems as though it may be a vertigo type thing if seen in a human. I know the ears are what give us balance. I will let you know, he has a vet apt tonight. I took the remaining pups out in tall grass, other than not seeing each other they ran around til they found short grass, then the fight was on little growls and barking. Was a lot of fun.

Vet says ear infection, pup has been given meds and hasn't shown any further episodes. They named him Doc

Now that's good news!
Re: A question about a puppy thing
I don't doubt the pup has an ear infection, many do.
More just fall down because they are pups.
Glad all is well and he should have gone to the vet anyway.

It is always better to be safe than sorry. Some learn it the hard way.
