New labby puppy

Post by jackp » Fri May 08, 2015 6:46 am

Hey guys, brand new to hunting with dogs (been hunting without for a while) and just had a few questions,
I have a 4.5 month old 17kg lab puppy who is a very confident "bleep" and doesn't mind showing his teeth when he gets told off, definitely thinks he's the alpha!

What age is okay to introduce this munchkin into the field mainly flushing rabbits and foxes, obviously I would be very careful as I don't know how he would react! Not so much interested in ducks as he isn't a confident swimmer yet.

Thanks!

You need to become in control of him first. Sounds like he is going to blow you off as far as Obedience goes.
That's my first impression here. IMO he needs yard work for obedience issues.

I once knew a Lab that smiled, at first I thought he was showing aggression.

However with your pup I would simply grab him by the scruff of the neck and slam him down on his back and say "NO!"

Labs are great dogs. You will not hurt his feeling but for only a second. You will need real help if he likes it :D

Get him into Obedience Class ASAP! He is already getting ahead of you.

I to have seen dogs do that strange smile thing, one Lab would do it every time it saw me then put its head on my lap to get its ears scratched.
