Your Dog's Vocabulary

I was pondering just how bright my setter is compared to all of my other dogs. He's going on 2 1/2 and the number of words and terms he knows is amazing.

At the top of everyone's list of course is:

1) Birds? ...wanna get BIRDS?!!

Then...

2) HUNGRY? want SUPPER?

3) TRUCK? want a RIDE in the TRUCK?!

4) Where's MOMMY?!

5) Where's your TOY?! Go get it!

6) WOAH!

7) COME!

8 ) Wanna go OUTSIDE?!

9) GET WET! ( I taught him this command for when he comes out of the swamp with black legs from the sludgy mud. He knows to go jump in our stream and wash off his legs)

.....many more that don't come to mind.

What are some that turn your pup's head instantly?

My dog has no vocabulary for he is..a dog

This does not mean that he cannot communicate. It is readily apparent to me that his lack of thumbs is a source of tremendous frustration for him.

My dogs have most all those same 'words' down also....but my dogs know whistle language...

Tweet - Sit and look at me or tread water where you are and face me while you tread water

Tweet w/ a hand signal back right or back left - sit and face me then on command spin right or left and run straight back on that line. Applies on land and water!

Tweet w/ an over signal right or left - sit and face me then on command run 90 degrees right or left on a straight line. Applies on land and water!

Tweet - tweet - tweet - Come here now, if you have a bird, deliver to hand now!

It is amazing what our dogs can be taught. Anyone who has not seen a retriever being sent on a bird they did not see drop (Blind retrieve) and then handled to the fallen bird. It is a beautiful thing to watch or do with your dog.

I can add " Yoh!" = change direction/ cross in front of me.

"Leave her!" stop bugging the older dog.

My dog would bark at a hose bib when he was thirsty. It was especially funny when I had him on an estimate with me. I would meet people outside of their home to talk about a job . They would see Max sitting in the truck and say it was ok for me to let him out while we talk. I would and if he saw a hose bib he would stand by it and bark. Not an annoying continuous bark but just a woof and then another a little while later. The people would ask what was up with max and I would reply oh nothing hes thirsty. They most times would look at me with a look of "you must be kidding" ? He knows what a faucet is ? Would you turn it on for him I would reply. If they had kids their kids would be lov'n it and saying come on max want a drink.

Chief, come here, dead bird (his nose goes to the ground and he goes nuts looking for something), sit, whoa, kennel, go to bed, no, where's your toy, bring it here, outside, inside, go upstairs, good/bad dog, load up, hup (change of direction in the field) and go potty. Never really thought about it like this but not too bad for a 7 month old pup..

I wonder how many of Y'all can 'say' SIT when you have your back to the dog and the dog actually sits ?

........That would be without any other reference of course ,like a nick of a collar or tug of a lead or gesture with your body .

That way you will know your dogs real vocabulary !

My dogs would not sit in that situation unless previously cued to by another vocal or visual signal. An awful lot of the vocal commands dogs understand and obey are cued by the situation and/or by visual signals that the handler isn't even aware of making.

I never wear denim at work so when I'm getting dressed in the morning Whip will take notice of that. Dress slacks come out and it's the melancholy dad's going to work harrumph back down in his bed. When it's the weekend and the jeans come out, we have a totally different dog. Up pacing, tail wagging, it always cracks us up. They figure things out.

My goal is always less vocalizing,For both me and dog. My dogs are only trained on three commands, Here,whoa and kennel. I hardly ever use any of them on the older dogs.
We pretty much understand each other. I have never tried but I doubt any would obey the command if my back was turned. It is all about eye contact and body language....Cj

I just tried that and had the dog sit with my back turned and from another room, I think that's the difference between kennel vs house dogs.

Dogs are smart and pick up on ques. Open that safe or grab the bag of collars/bells and see what happens. The same dog I have can hammer down and hunt from the truck or foot for hours sticking grouse and woodcock further than i care to admit, will walk and stay close checking things out finding plenty of sign on the trapline.

Your dog is not trained to Sit, unless you can sit him/her and walk around the house, finding the dog still at sit....then your dog is trained properly! I train this by going a little ways at a time...in time they learn...patients is the key!

First I ever knew there was a properly trained. But then I never improperly trained sit as I never found a use for it.

Soon as I put lipstick on, mine hit the crate. They know I'm going out and they aren't going if I'm putting lipstick on.

I'm hunting out of a Tracked Wheel Chair so I added a few new words/commands to my Setters repertoire: "Stand Off" When I'm going to move the chair; "Lunch", he pulls the lunch sack out he pack on the back of the chair, this one was easy to learn because his lunch is in the same bag. "Side" when I want him.on the side of the chair while I am loading and unloading firearms. I have really reinforced "Whoa" because he gets too excited around the chair and I have to stop him from getting too close when its moving. Particularly when he's retreiving.

Dog intelligence is usually measured by the number of repetitions it takes to imprint a command. Setters are 32 on that list. But there seems to be no limit to the number of commands they can learn as long as you have the stamina to repeat them often enough.
