Young pups

Post by CDN_Cocker » Sun Jun 04, 2017 5:48 pm

2 weeks ago I got my wife a chihuahua puppy. We had to put her mini dachshund down last summer due to VDD and it was not very pleasant. This little guy is pretty cute but there's a catch. We got him at 6 weeks - the mother passed away at 3-4 weeks old and the people raised him and his 2 siblings. He is now closing in on 9 weeks but it's obvious he didn't learn valuable socialization skills from his mother. I'd like to let him spend lots of time with the cocker to get that socialization however the cocker although gentle does everything at mach 3 speeds and accidentally steps on him. At 1.5 lbs that is dangerous. Anyone have any tips?

At 6 weeks of age I would prolly keep the lil guy one on one with you + family until he learns his new surroundings. At that size I do not know if he will learn to get out of the way of the Cocker, whose energy and display of speed and power is loved the world over in the sporting dog community.
Keeping life simple has always worked well for me!

I've had a lab pup at 6 weeks and a GSP pup at 5 weeks and had no trouble when socialising them but your pup is much smaller than they were. I'd wait until the pup was about 12 weeks old before letting the cocker and the pup interact much. I recently had a Brittany pup that I got at 12-14 weeks old. She was an "only" pup so she grew up only with adult dogs to interact with until that age.

As soon as I got her I handed her over to a friend with a cocker spaniel and a lab litter of about the same age. She bullied the cocker pups too easily so she was placed with the two lab pups who soon made her realise she was not The King of the Castle after all ! She grew up to be perfectly well adjusted to other dogs.

That's reassuring Bill. Hopefully the same is true for this little guy. Smart little bugger, he's house training like a champ.
