I remember seeing the story of the lost dog last fall, and felt so bad for the family.

Very lucky folks.
I had a dog go missing at a skeet shoot championship. Micochipped / ID'd collar but never to be seen again. Stolen I believe. Not something you totally get over ever.

I just read that on another site. Piece of advice, don't leave where you were camping, the vast majority of time the dog finds it way back to where it started. I'd spend a couple days waiting rather than leave the area. If there's two people, one stay at camp and the other go look.
