Cracked Nail
My GSP so how cracked the entire top off his nail, and was barely hanging on at the base. Vet could not get us in, recommended clipping it back and keeping it clean. Ended up clipping it, and have been doing epsom salt soaks twice a day and keeping antibacterial cream on it. Any recommendations on what else to do, or ideas on how long it may take to heal?

Ouch!
I had a dog rip a nail off really close to the toe and it took about 2 weeks or maybe a little less to heal up.

Re: Cracked Nail
3 occasions that I can think of offhand where a dog tore a nail almost completely off. In every case the dog was hunting and there was no indication that anything had happened to them by the actions of the dog - but there was blood everywhere. A little blood stop powder and a couple of days of crate time and they were happy to be let run again. Not sure how long it took for them to be completely healed.

Re: Cracked Nail
Luckily no blood surprisingly, and no limping. Just hesitant to let him run around with that much quick exposed, would hate to see it get infected. Nail seems to be getting a little better each day, I’ll grab a picture tomorrow. I imagine it will take a bit to read grow

I'm no vet , but based on that 3rd picture, shouldn't you get the vet to cut that off? Surely that nail is not going to re attach?

The nail was trimmed back as far as I could based off vet recommendations, I was debating trying to glue it back down or trimming it but did not want to risk infection. Seems to be healing, Boone is not a fan of the cone

How is the nail now? I'm asking because if my dog gets one of those I want to know how long it takes to heal.
(I had a GSP that looked exactly like yours. )

Re: Cracked Nail
Still healing up, the quick is kind of exposed, but it looks like a thin layer of nail is starting to grow back, I imagine it may take a week or two still. I ordered some fish oil pills and and nail grinder, I’m not the best at trimming nails and hoping that with the grinder I can smooth them out. Fish oil pills are suppose to help strengthen nails, maybe those will help. Still soaking it I’m Epsom salts twice a day and trying to keep antibiotic cream on it
Re: Cracked Nail
Thanks for answering; it is a definite drag caring for that kind of thing. My dog regularly gets a red sore on the top of a foot or between the nails. Epsom salts for 3 weeks+ then too. When I get out the epsom salts he runs to hide.
