Dog soreness and barbed wire

Post by RatDog » Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:22 pm

Sometimes when we hunt 2-3 days my 2 yo gsp Nelly will hobble around a bit for a couple days. This last time it was her front left leg, I don’t think it’s always the same leg but I’ll pay attention to that. Is that just muscle soreness? Does that mean I’m going too hard/too long?

She doesn’t act like she’s in pain the last day we hunt and I always wait until she is 100% before we go again. Is there anything wrong with doing it like that?

We are pretty much always hunting around barbed wire. Nelly has a terrible habit of slicing up her back and ears going back and forth under the fence. I can’t imagine how I would keep her from doing that? I try and hold up the wire for her but she ducks right back under as soon as she sees/smells something she likes. Anyone else have that problem?

That’s a real bummer! Guess I answered my own question. Last week we hunted for 3-4 hours mon-wed and like I said Thursday she was limping. Waited four days, no limping. We hunted yesterday and she was on fire, killed it. Got home and the limp is worse.

Have no problem taking her to the vet but when I’ve taken her for stuff like this in the past they just tell me to let her rest. Try making her take it easy for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately that means it’s the end of our season but we got after it so that’s alright.

I really hope she didn’t tear something or something serious! Limp doesn’t improve soon guess we go to the vet…

These little athletes are hard pressing individuals. So lets hope your pup is a little sore from the hard work in the field. Imagine what they do to themselves that we don't witness. Wishing you guy's the best for recovery . Here in the northeast we have barbed wire from days gone by and it has had us in the vet clinic more then once. I once read about an infection that dogs can get from barbed wire and remember asking my vet should I be concerned after one injury my pup had sustained. Her response was that she had heard of it but hadn't seen it before in my area. Clostridium was the name of the bacteria. She had rattled the name right off after I asked about it.

Give your dog a big hug and tell her good job!

Fortunately she only needed stitches once but it was gnarly. She sliced the last 2” of her ear in half. She ran by and looked like someone had tried to decapitate her there was so much blood. Pretty scary until I could figure out where it was coming from. Made sure to have an ample first aid kit in the rig after that one. Still had her ear taped up and she did the same thing to her back! Not bad enough to need stitches but not good either.

Around here you find birds at the edges, where you also find barbed wire fences. More than not you’re working back and forth along a fence line. I’ve considered one of those jacket things for her back but when I tried the skid plate on the other side for thick cover it would give her bad hot spots where it rubbed. She hates wearing it.

It’s been 2-3 weeks no cuts so maybe she’s learned her lesson

My father in law likes the star wr/rb for the Niners, Deebo Samuel, because he’s “the master of self destruction.” Pretty apt way of describing a bird dog about its business also

My worst dog memory is seeing a beagle hung up on a barb wire fence dead. I contacted the owner as the dog had I.D.; the owner had lost his dog , but went and got her to give her a proper departure.

My worst experience with one of my dogs was seeing the dog carrying on hunting with a 12+- slash across her chest. She had come upon a deer with a fawn and the deer attacked her. The slash had cut into one lung , but she recovered fine. My bank account took a while to recover. :)

Rat
Nice to see you back.
Some times lameness like that can be a symptom of untreated lymes. Don't know if you have that in your area. Might be something that takes a longer rest to recover from. Also could be Hip Dysplasia. KneeCap Luxation has similar Symptoms
Some dogs are way more accident prone then others. I had one that got cut up on barb wire every chance he got. South dakota has a lot of old fences..........Cj
