Oregon trials

Post by DGFavor » Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:03 pm

Had a good time at the Oregon Shooting Dog Ch. and the Reg. 10 Am. SD last week. Weather warmed up a bit and was pretty darn nice. Lots of good folks and nice dogs. They named a couple dogs, I think both pointers, for the Oregon Ch. Don't remember the names but the Ch. handled by Torben Hansen from Nevada and RU handled by Gary Hill from Oklahoma. Dan Hoke's Simon sure whipped one on us with 5 or 6 finds and big hunting race in his hour - was pretty cool to watch and don't mind gettin' thumped by those two!!
The Reg. 10 Am. had a smaller field but still a couple nice winners with Kelly's Rebel Maggie winning her 11th Ch. and Gary Brown's Vizsla, Lil Red Streak I think, taking RU - it's 2nd Ch. placement so cool for those guys. We pretty much stank it up with our dogs so at least we're consistent!!

Planned to take some pics out riding around but just didn't get it done. Took a few from camp staring at the dogs on the stakeout - probably should have just kept 'em there!! :D

Stitch - didn't have any of my stuff with me so just tied the dog to the flatbed of my truck, borrowed horses and saddle (ouch!!) from my buddy, and helped myself to his cooler:

The Grounds pic - WOW! Can't even imagine running in that country.

Doug, what's the breeding on those beautiful long-tailed dogs?

Pointer pedigrees are not my forte but Rich is up at the Pacific Coast trials this week and I can't get ahold of him to ask the exact pedigrees. The two youngsters, Sadie and Ben, are out of an AI breeding of Ch. Silverstrike x Ch. Idaho's Lucky Lady. Silverstrike is out of Copperstrike who I think twice goes back to Red Water Rex (or one of those "greatest bird dog of all time" dogs! ). Lady is out of Damascus, not sure of the dam. They are for real bird dogs and we shot a bunch of birds over 'em this year - good retrievers too! Medium size dogs, good personalities. Lady sleeps on the couch.

No, that's another buddy with the versatile pointers treeing the cats!! I don't think he wants to repeat that anytime soon!

Yah, I did help out with the cooler then followed up with an evening at the Rainbow tavern in Maupin with Richywayne and Dan Hoke swapping tales of woe!! Seemed like a good idea at the time...

Talked with Rich and he managed two firsts with Ben today at Sunnyside - ran him out in the last brace of the AA qualifier stake then turned around and ran him back in the shooting dog qualifier stake! :D Not sure about the birdwork in the AA but a pair of huns in the SD he said.

They ran the Chukar Futurity yesterday and I think the dog that won it also won last year...not sure how thats possible for a futurity...???

Good luck at your trial!! What stakes are you running in?

Sounds great! Good luck and give us a good report! It's pretty standard that your report or rundown of your brace will take a minimum of twice as long as the brace actually took to run. It wouldn't be out of the question that you replay or re-tell it for several days so limber up your typing fingers. I'm still replaying braces I ran months or years ago...still hasn't changed the outcome!! :D

SOunds like you had a great weekend.

Doug

With the big old white mountain in the background, were you at Madras.

Old Stitch is a very nice one, thanks for the pictures.

No Jer, we were at Tygh Valley, I think its a mountain range over from Madras. Very pretty valley, farming, ranching, and recreation community. Maupin is right on the Deschutes river. Some good lookin' chukar country in places. Usually see some huns pointed and Stitch nailed a covey of valley quail there a couple years ago but no native birds pointed this trial that I know of.

Holy cow, Jer, you shoulda seen Simon go in the Oregon SD! Not afraid to publicly say he won hands down, no brainer, if I was judgin' - but I wasn't - and he didn't... :? The dog has nothing to prove to anybody but sure would have been a nice addition/completion to his career to add an open AF championship to his portfolio. Dan and Mike are still gonna keep him!! :D

Thanks for the compliments on Stitch. Our birdwork just isn't real polished right now after the hunting season like it needs to be to win championships but I sure like what I'm seeing otherwise.

Simon is a veru nice critter, wish I had one just half as good. Did you see Jer's new dog he is running. I think his name is ED.

I heard he is very nice.

Was the hunting season so good that Stitch is not broke any longer?

I tell you, you guys, Doug and Jerry, have it rough.

Doug, you get to be out in that great country and worry about Stitch's style being a bit off for championship quality. All the while getting to ride and watch a dog like Simon light it up in an AF SD stake. Larue, a forum member, has been high on Simon for some time but always hear's "he's just a gundog".

Jerry, you and LB are a factor every time you put him down on the ground, and darn near anywhere in the country at that.

You guys keep up the good work, have fun doing it, and enjoy what ever happens. I'll be back here in Minnesota trying to slug my way through 1/2 hour weekend AKC stuff, learning and hopefully getting better for the future.

Doug, great pics btw and I bet you don'y have anything left in that cooler do you?

Thanks! Hard not to have fun with dogs, horses, open country, friends and a cooler! Nothing wrong with running 1/2 hour AKC - if we had more available in these parts and I had weekends off more often, I'd do more. I've got a dog with Dan right now to run just those very stakes!
