Pigeon watering dilema

Post by mtlee » Thu May 17, 2007 4:11 pm

I use what I consider a standard bird waterer, plastic bottle that you fill up...then screw the circular metal base on to it....turn contraption back over where it stands on the metal base and water fills the base as needed.

My problem is the dang birds sit on it and crap in it and shed feathers all in there water. Is there another type of waterer to prevent this? What do you guys use?

Build a wire cage around it with holes big enough for them to only stick there heads in there to get a drink

Nipple waterers are the only way to go for watering both pigeons and gamebirds.
Cap a 3 or 4 ft length of 4" pvc or even a 3-5 gal bucket.
Drill 3/8 holes in the bottom and insert nipples.
Hang in birds reach.
A top cap will need to be drilled as for an air vent.
The birds can't foul their water and there's no algae buildup.
These waterers are ideal for johnny houses, call back pens, pigeon lofts, etc.
They're cheap and I've never worn any out.

I agree 100%, the birds learn to use them quickly and they are no mess.

They do drip a little, so you'll want to make sure that whatever is below it can get wet. Also, they don't work in the midwest in the winter due to freezing.

I thought I read that pigeons require standing water in order to be able to drink. Apparently this is not true? I have several coops of pigeons now that I use for training and clean water is always a hassle. I'll have to give these ideas a try!

Thanks!!!!!!

Pigeons are one of the few birds that can actually drink. Other birds get a mouthful and raise there heads to let the water run down their throats.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I used to have hundreds of birds...

I had an aviary of lovebirds - not pigeons, but I had a couple hundred and what worked for me was the small animal water bottles - like for guinea pigs or bunnies. It was easy to train the birds to change from drinking out of a water bowl to drinking out of the water bottle. They make large ones for small dog crates nowadays, so they hold more water, attach from the outside of the coop so you can service from the exterior. I like the bottles because I could tell how much each pair was drinking, and if I needed to medicate them I could do so very easily via the water, and could tell right away who wasn't taking their meds or who was off color. It worked for me.

I was at home over the weekend helping out my dad with some stuff and asked if he would look for a bullet type waterer while he was picking up the horse feed. He came back with a regular water---just bigger than the one I use. I figured I'd try to modify it....we'll see if this keeps them from roosting on it! If not, I'll have to go with another option...

Richard *UT*,

Here's a picture of my small loft. It will hold about 16 birds.
The nipple waterer that I described is hanging on the fence to the right of the loft. Once filled I hang it inside the loft.
No fouling of water by the birds and no buildup of algae within the font.
Easy to make.

I had no clue what you were talking about before, but with the picture it makes sense....I think. Do you just drill the 3/8'' hole in the bottom cap and thread the nipple in? Thats it?

There are 2 different kinds of nipples. There is the push in and the thread in. I bought the push-in. Drill the hole, put the grommet in and push the nipple in. Only problem I have been having is getting the birds to drink from it. Maybe I don't have mine hanging high enough?

I also like the 5 gallon bucket idea. I may have to use that one for a buddy of mine. Hmmmmmm.

Wish I could post a pic for you, but my computer crashed last night! I'm having to bum off my room mates...and the pictures were saved to my laptop. Here's how I mad them though. Go to Lowe's or wherever and buy........

1 piece of 3'' or 4'' PVC pipe
2 PVC caps of appropriate size
Order push through nipples from farmtek.com
Drill hole (3/8" I think) in one of the caps
Insert nipple into cap, snap on grommet from inside of cap
PVC cement that cap onto the pipe
Drill holes in other end of pipe on the sides near the top to insert rope to hang the whole apparatus on a "S" hook screwed into the inside of the loft
Drill holes in other cap (so water will flow) and put it on the top of the pipe.
You're done!
