Iowa Hunters?

How many on this forum live or hunt in iowa? I live and hunt in southeast iowa.

I was raised in central Iowa, but now live in Wisconsin.
Will be hunting in Iowa November 10th and 11th, then again the first week in December.
Wisconsin hunting is good but sure do miss the Iowa roosters.

I do both live and hunt in eastern Iowa. This year will be slow but will still hunt in Iowa among other surrounding states.

I usually spent a week of vacation hunting south of Iowa City on my brother's farms. 7-8 days of hunting is just what the doctor orders come late November or early December. I hope the real cold weather holds off until after the first week of Dec. this year. The brother has a new duck lease that needs me to fill for a few mornings before hitting the fields for some pheasants and quail. Good Luck!

Went out yesterday. I have a young Shorthair and this is her first official season. She did awesome after the first bird was shot for her. We had our limit in 40 minutes. I have to say that this is the best hunt I have had in a long time.

I live in Ohio and came out to Iowa for the first time last November. I have a 4 y/o shorthair and we hunted around the Rosseville area in NE Iowa. We hunted for 2 1/2 days on private CRP land and it was great. I thought it was perfect dog working conditions with about 5 flushes and hour with some doubles and about one in ten were roosters. I am planning to come out Nov. 17-20th. I thought this time about going along I 80 from eastern Iowa to about the Grinnel area and maybe go north a little from there. Does anyone have any suggestions in that area? My buddy and I will have two dogs and the two of us. Any info would be great.

I just got home. I hunted Iowa County and shot 2 birds every day but one. The birds are down for sure but I seen over 100 birds total.

Well sounds like everyone is have a good year so far. I will be out this weekend. I have some good spots to go. When the crops are out and the cold weather sets in they we will awesome. Good luck everyone!

Just got back from a swing in central to NW Iowa- Public land only, and on a weekend- just a little nuts, right...????

Hunted mostly marshes and waterfowl production areas that had a decent amount of upland surrounding them. The results.....

Saturday- 20 roosters "moved" (one "covey" of 8!!!). VERY windy...and by the end of the day, I was ready to trade guns! Two birds taken over solid points, but the third was a challenge-- once they flushed wild, and got up into the wind, it was advantage Rooster!

Sunday- Fewer birds seen (a dozen), but good dog work, better shooting, and less #$%@ wind- limited out (3), the last one right at noon!

Notes- Be ready to walk... a lot!!! I always seem to find myself clear at the far end of an area...and the truck is always at the other end! Hunt the thickest, nastiest stuff around- I don't like the sound of a beeper, but I find them useful at times.

Dog #1- range about 75-100yds- I just try to put Jet into good cover, follow him, and hope I can keep up! He's the morning dog- when I'm full of energy , too!

Dog # 2- range 50-60yds- Gus stays closer, and is fine with me setting the direction of the hunt. He's a nice change of pace, especially when I'm a little less "fresh" than when I started!

SE Iowa resident, a quail hunter by heart, a pheasant hunter by necessity...

just got back from 2 and a half days in central iowa. what a great hunt! awesome dog work, 4 roosters on Friday, 8 on Saturday, and then my britt found ud 2 more on Sunday morning. Plus, after the hunt on Saturday we caught part of the Fighting Illini taking down the #1 ranked buckeyes! couldnt have had a better time. we did alot of walking for our birds, and we had to work for them, but definitely a great hunt. the guys i went with hunted the same property 2 years ago and said the numbers were down since then, but still plenty of birds to satisfy 4 guys from IL.

I hunted on the 8th and 9th near the Audoban area. We killed 6 the first day (2 of us) and 9 the 2nd day. (3 of us). I saw more birds this year over there than I have ever seen before. It actually reminded me of years gone past in South Central Iowa around Mt. Ayr. We saw at least 15 roosters come out of a creek in one bunch.
The conditions for a dog were horrible though, hot and very dry and dusty. We did get several good points but trying to find down birds was tough.

Loess Hills on the west side. Huge amonts of birds on private farms we hunt. Also hunt private farms in Nebr, same thing. I find if they leave "buffer strips" of grass along the crops you will have a pheasant crop to play with

I'm headed 25 miles south of Iowa City to hunt Dec. 6-12. My brother owns a farm and his neighbors are pretty good to us. Last year we saw alot of pheasants. I talked to him yesterday and they ran into a few coveys of bobwhites last weekend. I can't wait to get there with the GSPs.

Good luck nitrex. I will be home in Iowa at the same time. Will be in Green county, about 25 miles west of Ames.
Talked to my brother yesterday and he said that we should be into alot of birds.

did you change your mind on the pup? We have had good luck the last two weekends on private and public ground. Was going to go today, but with deer season and the weather, too many things to worry about. You know how it is "if it's brown it's down". Birds should start to hold a little better now though. Good year here for bird numbers.

Bird you are right, the only good thing is it isn't later in the year. There is plenty of good cover, and over here it warmed up a little before dark and melted things a bit. Saw the group out back of my place about 4:30 and they looked high and dry.

I used to hunt a bit on public lands between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids when in grad school at UofI. Didn't have a dog but managed some luck. What I wouldn't give for a pattie melt at the Hamburg Inn or a pork tenderloin out in West Branch right now.
