Hunt test field trials i know nothing....

Post by luke0927 » Sat Feb 09, 2008 11:14 am

When i first got my GSPs i was just looking for a good hunting dog and think i have done very well they are progressing along very well. I have never had any experience with trials or putting titles on dogs etc...honestly i would like to learn about trails cause when some of you start talking about all the things it goes way over my head... i see all these titles on dogs but do not know what they mean.

I want to continue to work my dogs and by this fall hopefully have them broke all the way to the falling bird i want a well mannered hunting dog, but now i am intersted in trying to get say a JH and them a SH and maybe even a MH. What does it take to do that? Is that just a hunting test? what type of level do the dogs need to be at to acheive those?

Google AKC and you will find the rules to their hunt test.

If I were going to go for a hunt test title I would decide which one I wanted and would skip the rest. JH means little or nothing. SH is fine but you are training to a lower standard than you want in the end if MH is your goal. Then after your done with SH you have to change the rules for your dog. The time it takes to get the SH could be used finishing to MH without teaching the dog it's alright to break at the shot

But, go to test's and help out if you can, great experience. Also even if you can't help, walk braces and see what's happening.

The rule is that the SH and MH take one more pass than normal if you don't already have the JH and SH, respectively.

I would suggest always going through at least SH. You dog can be at the MH level and still run SH. You can use SH to see really where your dog is at. Dogs are different at test than in your back yard. It does not ever hurt to run SH IMO. Once you have been around tests for a while and finished some dogs maybe then go straight to Master. Always remember this if your dog qualifies as a master once and decides it wants to screw with you at a test or something you really can't correct them in Master without getting disqualified like you can in SH. Plus you can't go back and get a SH title. So, if your dog can't finish MH you cannot get a SH, if your dog qualified as a MH one time. Also you will have to do Master 6 times.

Ok so you can skip them....but say you have a dog at SH level or what you think is SH and you want to go to JH just becasue its your first time there wouldn't be a problem with that correct? then you could just try SH next time. are there multiple parts to each test?....I guess i need to go do some reading.

I always train my dogs so that there at the next level. Like when running Junior I handle the dog as a senior just a have room for screw ups with the dog running only junior makes the next step easier. Always train ahead as if your running at the next level. In a hunt test there is a back course and a bird field usually. The back course they are looking for how your dog hunts and handles. In the bird field is usually where you'll have all your bird contacts. Back course usually 20 in SH MH 10 minutes in JH. Bird field usually 10 Minutes.

If you have a MH completed, why would you want to go back and get the SH?

I said that and you can't go back. If your dog qualifies as a MH you can't go back and get SH. I don't know why but it is in the rule book.

What you are saying is once you run MH you can't go back and run SH but what Don asked is if you have a MH title why would you want to go back.\

Personally, With the cost and travwel time involved and my impatience, I just train for MH and run MH. I don't want hold back a dogs progression.

If your dog is steady to wing shot and fall, stops to the flush, retrieve reliably to hand, honors reliably and you can handle your dog. You are ready for MH.

If you are nervous about it enter him in the SH and see what it is all about. Follow along with some braces. Basically you go hunt your dog. If your training is done the dog will do fine. It will be you that probally messes up.

There is a post here somewhere with tips for hunt test.

Have fun and don't pressure yourself.

Because the Master title cancels out the SH so it would not show up as a title anyway but it is not allowed by the AKC either.

I would suggest if you haven't run in any tests in the past to at least run in Senior in preparation for Master. You will learn a lot about how to run in tests and what judges are looking for.

You would be amazed at the bracemates that I have had who I had to coach while in the back course! They didn't have a clue about the tests and just entered their dog. A bracemate can make or break the whole brace for both dogs. I've had dogs completely bowl my dog over while she was on point thus creating problems in the future for my dog. It's not a pleasant thing to have happen!

I remember back to my early Senior tests and Snips gave me some tips!

Here's my concern about going straight to MH. Say you've got a good dog, but not a 'perfect' dog, as MH's are supposed to be. But you go out, maybe on your first or second try, your dog manages to put it all together and squeak out a MH leg. After that - one thing or another keeps preventing your dog from getting that 2nd leg because, quite honestly, they're just not truly at the MH level yet. So you spend all this money on all these MH attempts only to get SH-level performances - so you get nothing. And since you squeaked out that 1 MH leg, you can't go back and put a SH on that dog, even if it's more than meeting that standard. If you had spent that money on SH, you'd have a SH, but since you didn't, you're left with a dog with no titles.

Anyway - training for the MH level is a good idea, but I wouldn't hesitate getting a SH in the interim.

First of all I think if one wishes to run SH or even JH go do it and have fun and learn. I am just not that patient and don't like spending the money. A SH title means nothing to me.
