Spray Bottle

Post by GnM » Thu May 28, 2009 8:18 pm

I read in "POINT" dog training book that the author used a spray bottle to help steady his dogs. I tried using it on my dog, teaching "whoa" I couldn't believe it works. Once the dog starts to move just give him a squirt, doesn't take long for the dog to understand. So I was wandering if anyone else has used this method?

I used it on my 10 week old Britt when he started tried escaping from the runner. He likes his kennel now

I've never herd of using a spray bottle. Do you just spray the dog or do you hit the dog in the head with it and if so how hard! :? What is the idea behind it and how does it work?

To me its an extension of the check cord and more gentle than an ecollar. I whoa the dog, if the dog moves, I just give him a squirt. I aim for the chest. Even when the water doesn't hit him, he seems to know he messed up when I just spray it. James Spencer uses it to help steady his dogs, I just wanted to see if it would work with whoa, which it seems to. I will be trying it when I start to steady my dog.

I use the spray bottle quite a bit in the house. Leena likes to try and come into the kitchen. She loves water but hates being sprayed.

It's so easy to teach the things I'm reading here without spraying a dog that it seems nuts to instill the notion that spray is a bad thing and then perhaps not be able to readily hose a muddy dog off or cool a hot one down with a garden sprayer. But to each his own...

(Observes a fellow who once followed the oft-heard advice to rig a kennel hose to spray a barker.)
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Not sure to whom that comment was directed, but my dogs could care less about being sprayed with the hose. In fact, they love it. My Labrador loves being sprayed in the face with it LOL

The only time I spray my dogs is the GSP and thats with a spray bottle and thats only ever in the house. I would rather spray her then some people who choose to get physical with punishment.

Doesn't take physical punishment to teach any of the things y'all are using spray for.
