AKC Kennel Registration Requirements

Post by chicago0517 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 4:17 pm

The other day I was looking online to see if a friend's dad's kennel name was still active with the AKC. I figured they'd have an online listing of active kennel names. Perhaps they do, but I couldn't find it.

What I did find, however, was the AKC's stipulations for getting a kennel name. I've included them below, but they seem pretty tough on the guy who may have a litter of dogs every 3-5 years or so. I mean look at numbers 1 and 2 (I added the numbers for simplicity).

Can an 'average Joe' come up with a kennel name, get it registered and keep it in good standing by just having a litter every now and again? Any idea what NAVHDA's rules on the subject are and now that the AKC and NAVHDA are playing friendly how all that works.

Just surprised at the qty the AKC makes a kennel put out to be registered.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS CAREFULLY. ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION FOR THE GRANTING OF A REGISTERED KENNEL NAME. APPLICATION INFORMATION WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH REVIEW OF AKC RECORDS.
- Have a documented background of involvement/participation in AKC events. You must complete the Event Participation Worksheet listing dogs by AKC name and registration number.
-Be a breeder in good standing with the American Kennel Club with a record of breeding and registering purebred dogs in conformity with AKC registration rules and policies.

Meet one of the following breeding requirements:
1. Bred at least 5 registered litters in the past 5 years;
2. Owned stud dogs that have produced at least 40 registered litters in the past 10 years.
3. A breeder, who has bred at least one AKC registered litter, may be granted a registered kennel name on a five-year provisional basis. The breeding requirements above must be met during the five-year period to be eligible to renew the registered kennel name.
4. May not have an interest in a pet store or dog dealership.

Not sure I understand.

The AKC wants to reserve its registered kennel name program for those who are established in a breed, and are making a significant contribution to that particular breed. It seems to me that they are discouraging the attempted registration of kennel names by rather casual breeders who want to retain a kennel name just because they can. In the grand scheme of things, the guy breeding a litter every 3-5 years has not developed a line that can be clearly defined by a particular kennel name.

Regardless, few if any performance kennels in the AKC have their kennel names registered. It's more of a show thing than anything else.

Apparently not, according to the guidelines.

NAVHDA's kennel registration info available here: http://www.navhda.org/kenreg.pdf . Apparently you can register a kennel name with NAVHDA and never whelp a litter.

Regarding AKC and NAVHDA, you NAVHDA guys really like dreaming up some crazy stuff, don't ya? The relationship between AKC and NAVHDA is no different from the relationship between NAVHDA and American Field; nothing more than registration reciprocity. The AF/NAVHDA relationship or the AKC/AF relationship has been in place for years, with no real impact other than making registration easier. From the AKC side, the NAVHDA reciprocity is a non-event, from the NAVHDA side (or at least from some of their membership) it's the sign of the apocalypse!

FDSB (American Field) has registered kennel names as well, but I have no idea what their policies are.

FWIW,
Dave

FDSB you send in yoru request they accept or deny ..is like 50 dollars the first year and 15 a year each year after

then someone has to have your permission to use your registered name as a pre pr post but they can still use your name in the middle of a name

so in my case you would have to have my permission to use K nine as K nine Dash Master or as Dash Master Knine but you do not need permission for Dash K nine Master....
