Avid Friend Pet Chip
Avid Friend Pet Chip
This one is new to me. My vet just started offering this micro chip to her patients.
It is the only chip that can be read by all scanners, including Pet Smart. I can also read Pet Smart Chips.
This company is giving scanners to all shelters, pounds, free of charge so that they now have the ability to scan every dog that comes in. Service is available Nationwide and it is reasonable.
Vet charged $45.00 to insert it, and the tracking company charges $15 for a dog. $40 will cover up to 8 dogs from one kennel or household.
I had my dog done just now. I alrerady feel more comfortable.

A few weeks back the local humane society was sponsoring a "microchip your pet" day at a community fun days event. The humane society subsidized the vet bill so anyone could get a microchip for only $15 (the cost of the chip itself). We missed out on it, but we do plan to have our guy chipped at the vet. She only charges $30 or so for the Avid chip. We'll feel a lot better as soon as we get that done. If you think about it, $30-$40 is very little to pay to insure that you don't suddenly lose your pet, which is valued much higher.

I got my dog's chip put in when he got fixed. SC state law requires all vet offices and shelters to scan for chips when an animal (stray/found/whatever you wanna call it) is brought in, and you supply your name, home phone, work phone, address, vet's phone/address, and also contact info for one "alternate" person who does not live with you, all to be entered onto the chip. So, basically, if the dog's taken to a vet or shelter, somehow, some way, someone will be in contact with you. Brilliant idea. You just gotta hope your dog gets taken to a shelter or vet, and not snagged by some opportunistic redneck who's too cheap to buy his own hunting dog....
I think the chip is a great idea. In fact, I am thinking of making it a requirement of the dogs I take in to train.
That said........... I have a client that lost a dog in the UP of Michigan on a THursday afternoon. by astroke of luck they found the dog tied to a tree, in the yard of a local man Friday morning. After aproaching the home owner, they wee told the dog has been there and it was on theirs.
The local policing agency was called. THe dog was "chipped" all they had to do is get it to the local pound or Vets office to prove ownership. The officer said it would take an order from a Judge, which would have to wait till Monday!
If the dog was tattooed, and registered with the world wide tattoo registry, all it would have taken was a phone call right then and there. THis process is just a bit cheaper than the Chip and is as good. They will register any animal that bares a numbered or brand tattoo.
In this case both would have worked out. I am for both forms of ID.
Just some food for thought.

Likewise I went with the chip and it was around $50. I've heard great storied of people getting there dogs back and they were several states away.
That's a crazy story of having to wait until Monday. This guy had to have known it's a losing situation. What a jerk to make the rightful owner have to wait like that. Maybe they should start equipping the police with a scanner back at the station that they can send someone out with. Thanks for the story though, I hadn't heard that one.

re:
I got the Avid FriendChip implanted in Gracie yesterday. Cost was $55.
I will also pay the $15 and enroll in the PetTrac database. The way I understand it, if you don't enroll in PetTrac, when you pet is scanned, your Vet's info will be shown. The scanning facility will contact your vet who will then contact you with the where abouts of your pet. If you enroll in PetTrac, all of your info is directly available to the scanning facility.
