Snow cock
Snow cock
No, this isn't porn. Has anyone killed one of these birds? This is the rarest upland bird in the U.S. 4 killed per year, as I see it. They fly at 80 MPH. That is amazing.

If I can see it I can hit it.

Re: Snow cock
I am at my tax appointment ignoring bad news...I know what they are - have seen one glassing mulies in the Ruby mountains out of Elko nevada. They are a spot and stalk critter cannot get a dog to them reasonably there. Have to check in with the NDOW office before you go and when you return. I would like to do it...but it will take a week and I need the time off work to FIELD TRIAL. However, the site I posted in "submit your site" ...that would be the guy if you wanted a guide.
Re: Snow cock
Just saying that, that is awesome. What a trophy. Sleeping with your dog in a tent as you pursue a bird that is very difficult to harvest. 11,000 feet. Kick azzzzz!

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Go to NDOW's web site and use the keyword search function.
I think that the birds were also released in the Wallowa Mtns. in Eastern Oregon but I don't think that they took to them as well as they did in the Ruby's so as far as I know the only huntable population of them is in Northern Nevada.

I assumed that the thread probably referred to a painful medical condition resulting from hunting in waist-deep North Dakota snow drifts.prairiefirepointers wrote:I read the heading and thought perhaps somebody pushed you down whilst urinating.
Re: Snow cock
Good one CK. I laughed out loud. Snow has actually been melting the last 3 days. We should see the ground by April 1st anyway. I hope.

Re: Snow cock
I read about them a couple of years ago. Only one or possibly two western states where you can hunt them. Exotic import. Need an oxygen system to hunt them.

Re: Snow cock
Has anyone read the article in GunDog this month about the White Tailed Ptarmigan? This hunt takes place in Colorado, but numbers are just as low and they live 12,000 feet and above. Looks similar

Re: Snow cock
I enjoy Ptarmigan hunting. Not hard once you locate them....it's the getting to them that can be the challenge. This was from this past fall in UT. A little bit above 12,500ft.redman25 wrote:Has anyone read the article in GunDog this month about the White Tailed Ptarmigan?
