What Other Dog Would You Have?
What Other Dog Would You Have?
For some time now, I have been pondering what will be the next breed of hunting dog that I will bring home. I have decided that I would like to get a Red and White Irish Setter. I love look of that duel color working a field and their disposition.
So, what would be your next breed?
So, what would be your next breed?

Going to be a shorthair for me. Just love their versatility, biddabilty, and clownish personality.

Wow, unless you want a pointer your choices are really limited (3).
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
EP, just something about their look with the tall tail etc that I love, but I'll stick with my V's

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I'd get a black shorthair. I think they are really sharp looking.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Tough call. I'd probably go with an EB, black and white GSP, or heavily ticked pointer (any color)....in that order. Ideally though I'd like to own a dog from each breed before my time is up. So many dogs so little time!
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I think we will always stick to GSP's i just love them..next time probably white with large black saddles..we like that look ...ruth

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I once had an Irish Setter out of show stock who at the age of 1 year when I had to get rid of him because of a relocation I had made would not point a sparrow much less anything else but man that dog would hunt the he!! out of quail and pheasant, flush them, and would retrieve anything you could shoot. Some day I would like to have an Irish Setter out of field stock to hunt over. Not the Red and White Setter and not a Red Setter but a real Irish Setter with hunting in his blood and on his mind.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Well, I am a pointer man. I did add the springers. Hope that helped.nikegundog wrote:Wow, unless you want a pointer your choices are really limited (3).

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I have had britts all my life but have also have had a GSP a EP but have been thinking about getting a Boykin or a Am water spaniel or even a springer not sure but leaning towards the boykin
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
None of you guys voted? I voted and there was only one response. I have run with enough dogs of different breeds that I don't feel compelled to switch. Brittany here.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I've owned a pudel-pointer (surpisingly good ), an Irish Setter (useless), a GSP (great bird dog but alpha and strong willed), a Britt ( so hyper it committed suicide by jumping out of a half open car window at 50 M.P.H.) and a Ryman English Setter (currently 16 years old) along with various terriers and other assorted non hunting breeds. I'll never own another dog that isn't an English Setter/Llewellin and I'm looking for a pup as we speak. Just one man's opinion.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
My fault. I added the springers and the votes went bye bye. Please revote.

PP. Where is the love for PPs?
Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short.

I doubt I ever have own a different breed other than Brittany's but if I did it would either be a EP or a English setter.

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I don't ever see me having anything but EPs, they are tough, dumb, and crazy like me.
Realistically I'd prob wind up with a GSP (that Cajun Casey talked me into) so I voted for that.
The wife has said when her rescue Redbone dies she kinda wants a rescue Vizla.

I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Well i have a GSP and have a deposit down on a little of Pudelpointers....so the next one is going to be a PP. After that i would have a gwp/drahthaar on the list......

I've got a Lab who hunts well, but hunted over 2 Britts the other day and WOW were they good, hunted all day in warm weather. I'd love to get one like that for the early season here in AZ.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Llewellin setter, have a GSP now ,and I grouse hunt a lot. I also heard that they are bred with natural abilities to retrieve and point, so it would be a little less training than other dog breeds.

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Have hunted with brits and one lab in my life, couldn't ask for any more out of them. Tuesday I brought home my WPG pup, do as much waterfowl as upland hunting, cause I don't have to travel to do so. Really wanted to consolidate to one dog, hope all works out, he has a lot to live up to after my brits and lab.

I'm a brit guy...I think I'll have to stay with them! I my wife appreciates the fact that they are "house dogs" as well. I respect all dogs though, epecially the GSP's, GWP's, EP's, LMNOP's

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
People own dogs that aren't Brittanys? No way.
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Should be checkboxes instead of radio buttons so you can make multiple selections. I have always had shorthairs. The only other 2 I'd consider are pointers and setters.

I'm a shorthair guy all the way. But I grew up hunting with Brittanys, wouldn't mind having one of them or a llewellin.

3Brits,
Because we like the Gordon and Ryman dogs so much, I will probably add another Gordon to our Grouse dog kennel next, picking from a proven Gordon Grouse dog line, I was definitely not satisfied with the Red Setters bidability & temperment when introduced into my kennel, probably will not go that way again any time soon. We have 6 gun dogs in our Grouse dog kennel right now, and until our 14 year old SM passes away, probably no additional animals will be purchased. We did look at the German Longhair recently, they are nice dogs also. Cheerstone my Weimer is only a year old and doing just fine, one Weimar in our house at a time.

Had labs and Britts.
Before I die, I'd like to have (in no particular order)
Boykin
DD
PP
EP
GSP
Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
I can understand wanting various dogs. Maybe next time I'll allow more than one choice.
I keep telling my wife that I am going to get a clumber spaniel when my knees will no longer walk the chuckar hills.

I am 64 and have serious health challenges, so my present 21 mos old Llewellin will probably be my last. If I were to get another, it would be a Llewellin.

I have always had vizslas and always will, however I will be adding a pointer to the pack next.
You could live without a dog, but it would not be worthwhile.

The Red Setter was not an option.. There is a difference between Red Setters, Irish Setters and Red and white Setters...

Re: What Other Dog Would You Have?
Pretty narrow list there. After being around a few, I would look toward a French Spaniel, then a small Musty. both very Nice hunting dogs.
Along with it, definately a Chessy.
