Digestive Enzymes
I am thinking about putting my 15 month GSP on a digestive enzyme so he gets the full nutrition out of his food. Because he doesn't like to eat a lot. So if figured I would help him get the full benefit from the food he does eat. I was just wondering if anyone has every used digestive enzymes and if they have which one they would recommend?

I use baby bunnies (whole) as supplements, this has worked for years.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
One of the reasons to use probiotics or enzymes is that we feed dogs on an accelerated schedule and their systems become acclimated to pushing food through more quickly than is effecient.
I like Prozyme.

I also like Prozyme. My setter does much better on it than off.
Re: Digestive Enzymes
I agree with the above. All mentioned are good products. We have settled on Total - Zymes Plus. Tablets are just easier for use.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
I never found a need so I have never tried them. Seems that you are just duplicating what is in the bag of dog food as well as what is already in the dogs digestive tract. If you have a dog that is actually having a problem due to heavy antibiotic use or some other malady then a temporary need may be there. But healthy dogs do not need supplements THAT ARE JUST ANOTHER EXPENSE WITH LITTLE OR NO PAYBACK. JMO and JME

Re: Digestive Enzymes
Thinking along those lines Ezzy.....I guess I don't understand why anyone would add enzymes to a healthy dogs food. It doesn't make sense to me. The only dog I ever gave enzymes to was a GSD that had EPI. It was crucial for him to be supplemented since he failed to produce his own digestive enzymes.
If the dog already produces it, why supplement it?

PaulMeyer,
I am the first to suggest Prozyme Enzymes when needed. I also agree if your dog is in good weight and NO skin , coat, or stool issues you may not need it. I am of the belief if it ain't broke don't fix it.
For further info and to purchase Prozyme's site is http://www.prozymeproducts.com/

Re: Digestive Enzymes
Paul- What kind of food are you feeding? Also, can you post a pic of the dog?
Re: Digestive Enzymes
Look at what you just posted, 'my dog is Healthy" but I want to put more weight on him. I would suggest you leave healthy alone and when the dog matures you will be trying to keep weight off of him. Practically everyone on this board ehat thinks their dog is too thin put up a picture of a dog in perfect shape but they are so use to seeing overweightdogs they think theirs should look like that also.paulmeyer21 wrote:My dog is complete healthy he is just under weight and I can't put any weight on him so I was hoping this might help!
Just be happy with healthy as it doesn't get any better than that. Bet your parents didn't give you supplements when you were a teenager.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
I am feeding him Nutri Source Performance which is 30 - 20. I have been through many foods to try and get him to eat better. My vet says he is a little underweight. I know what you guys are going to say that, vets are use to seeing labs but my vet actually owns a GSP.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
He looks smallish and lacking muscle for his age. I have one a bit older that is thinner but has very defined muscle mass. That dog's daddy is my ProZyme dog. Could you give a shoulder height and an idea of his pedigree?

Re: Digestive Enzymes
Yeah he is a smaller framed GSP. My vet said she would like to see him closer to 50# for his frame. Right now he is about 42 #. He is about 23 1/2 inches tall.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
Most male German shorthairs don't fill out until over two years of age. The Prozyme wouldn't hurt anything and might help him get a little more out of his food. Just try a thirty day course and see if he gains or fills out.

Re: Digestive Enzymes
She is hard to keep weight on without. She is still trim but I don't want to be able to count her ribs from across the yard. That is not to say anyone else's dog needs it but mine does well on it.SCT wrote:In what ways does he do much better? What does it help with??AZSetter wrote:I also like Prozyme. Re: Digestive Enzymes
Your dog looks fine to me...(hard to tell from pics)....
If you feel you need to supplement his food then thats your deal....
I, me personally feel that with the right supplements some GSP's can benefit from some supplements.
I have a notorious line of dogs who are long and thin, does not make them out of shape or starving for anything.
I feel they benefit from supplements.
I choose Oomph, it is more than just an enzymatic supplement but a whole dietary supplement, that has been tested and proven from 3 different instituitions.
Texas A&M, University of Wisconsin, and I believe Duke University....not just lab tested but field tested. With pro trainers.
Some folks like it. Some folks dont.
Me personally I will continue to use it.
Good luck

Re: Digestive Enzymes
We started using several years ago since we travel so much with our dog's during hunting season. Really seemed to help so just continued the rest of the season (no ezzy, not going into detail, that too is my opinion and I'm stickin' to it). Oomph is actually made about 3 miles from the house. Will have to give that another look. Whatever you feed or suppliment with, all that matters is that your dog's do well. So I really don't think we're wasting a penny. Good luck

It may be worth your research.
