AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
I used to know the answer to the following question. However, old age has crept in ..... The question is when a dog performs a stop to flush at either Senior or Master Hunt Test level, must you or should you fire the blank gun? If so what is the reasoning behind your answer and can you cite anything in the AKC regs to support your answer.

Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
They changed the rule a couple of years ago. For senior it now reads "The firing of a blank gun for a stop to flush is at the option of the handler. The dog must adequately disply its steadiness to wing before the optional shot can be fired. A senior dog may be collared away from a stop to flush."
Master stayed the same as always--" A blank shall be fired on a stop-to-flush".
Master stayed the same as always--" A blank shall be fired on a stop-to-flush".

Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
Minn. judges require a blank on a stop to flush. Got DQ'd in Indiana for blanking a stop to flush. Seems to be nothing in the book either way. Best ask the judge and when in Rome do as th Romans do. Cj

Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
So in Senior, the dog is allowed to go with the shot. Does this hold true if you fire a blank on a stop to flush?
Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
I have totally read the rule book on stop to flush and I find not one word on blanking a stop to flush. There has been know recent rule change.deseeker wrote:They changed the rule a couple of years ago. If you can tell me the section in the rule book I will apprecCJiate it

Ok found it thanks. CJ

Page 23, Section 5 for SH:
"The firing of a blank gun for a stop to flush is at the option of the handler. The dog must adequately display its steadiness to wing before the optional shot can be fired."
I think it was modified slightly a year or two ago. Before, it was my understanding that a shot had to be fired, and that the dog had to remain steady until the shot - like all birdwork in SH, the dog is allowed to break on shot.
My understanding of the new wording is that the handler doesn't have to fire a shot, but if he doesn't, the dog has to remain steady and can't break.

" A blank shall be fired on a stop-to-flush bird."

Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
Another question that came up while training that I am getting mixed answers on - In Senior, if a blank is fired and dog breaks on the shot and chases is he then required to retrieve that bird?
I took the seminar a couple of years ago but don't think the question ever came up. We run in again in a couple of weeks, hopefully the situation doesn't come up and if it does I hope our summer training pays off.

Definitely not required, and I doubt, if he did manage to run it down, catch it, and retrieve it, that he'd get credit for it. Think it needs to be a shot bird.

Re: AKC Hunt Tests (Senior & Master)
Haven't run into it when a bird was blanked but he did get scored on a retrieve when the gunners missed and he went with the shot. The birds weren't flying well that day so easy to run down and catch. He blew it in the last 30 seconds with a "pause to flush", catch and retrieve so I don't know if they would have called him back for a shot bird had he finished the time.
