Boy or Girl?
I am planning on adopting a Brittany pup in the spring. This pup will be 80% family dog and 20% hunting dog. Should there be a preference for male or female? If so, why?

Boy Or Girl
I have both as pets/hunter trialers, I feel the little girls are less head strong...........3 GSP's (2 girls 1 boy). That is my experiance, and may not be the same as others

In the V community, the general wisdom is that the males are more affectionate.

In my opinion there is only one answer to this question and that is which ever one you like the best. There is no consistant quality that one sex has over the other. Males tend to be a little bigger, stronger, and possibly bolder. That said there are always exceptions. I like the females because I always thought they were easier to house brake but I'm not really sure that is true either.
Get the one you want and it will be right for you. Personal Preference!

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Personally I don't believe there's a nickel worth of difference between them. As previously stated males will be slightly larger. Hunting ability should be equal.
Males: 1.) Fight more often
2.) Lift there leg on EVERYTHING
3.) ALWAYS have ONE thing on there mind (lovemaking).
Females: 1.) Two heat cycles per year. Can't be hunted with any
male dogs. See # 3 above.
2.) Litters preclude trng./conditoning/hunting.

We got a male for our first (vizsla) dog. A few things went through my mind when I was thinking about it.
1. He's my little buddy as well as my hunting partner. If he was a she, I might not have the heart to work him as hard when he needs it. (Currently my wife is the only one in the house that always breaks for the puppy-dog face).
2. We were getting a dog from good lines... should that dog prove worthy of breeding, we weren't sure we'd be ready or able to manage a litter (female-end work), yet wouldn't want to prohibit the line from going on. Males can breed with much less committment on part of their owners.
3. We were told by other people we asked for advice that males are the way to go.
4. My wife thinks that when females have fully developed nipples (from recent litter maybe?) it looks weird.
Now you can see these threads of thought are all in different directions, and not a one of them makes really good sense as a legitimate reason to pick one gender over another. But they are perfectly honest things that may go through your mind (and there are obviously female-oriented weird somethings that you may think about too).
So, taking that into consideration, just begin to evaluate what goes through your mind when you ask yourself that question and go from there. Like Ezzy said, it's all personal preference. Some folks have males, some folks have females, and it's all good because it takes both to make the breed exist.
